If there’s one team which had a field day in yesterday’s MLB action, it’s the New York Yankees. The iconic outfit recorded a splendid 7-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays to strengthen their grip on one of two available wildcard spots in the American League.

Furthermore, the Boston Red Sox, their fiercest rivals, suffered a shocking defeat at the Baltimore Orioles. While this result helped the Yankees in terms of the playoff race, it added salt to the wounds of the Red Sox.

The Yankees put on a stellar show in the Rogers Centre to record an important victory over the Blue Jays. Although the Blue Jays scored the first run of the match in the first inning itself, the Yankees came back strongly to take their record this season to 90-67.

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton stepped up to the plate for the Yankees once again, putting on a masterclass in batting display. Judge scored a solo home run in the third to tie the score at 1-1. While he scored two runs and two RBI, Stanton smashed a three-run home run in the seventh inning which changed the game for the Yankees.

On the other hand, the Red Sox failed to put the Orioles away, despite the latter having the worst record in the American League (51-106). This handed their long-time rivals the need to score just three wins in the remaining five games to secure a wildcard spot.

This loss to the Orioles compounded the Red Sox’s misery, who are now on a four-game losing streak. In fact, the Yankees began that losing streak when they swept them in their three-game series prior to yesterday’s games.

A few fans took to Twitter to add salt to the Red Sox’s wounds, as the playoff race continues to intensify.

Could we see another battle between the Red Sox and the Yankees this year?

Their rivalry is one of the most historic not just in baseball, but across all sports. It goes all the way back to the days of Babe Ruth playing baseball, when the Red Sox traded him to the Yankees and embarked on a journey which saw the former not win a World Series for over 80 years.

While they will not face each other in the ongoing regular season, they may do so in the playoffs. With the Yankees looking likely to clinch one wildcard spot, the race is on for the second one. The Red Sox find themselves in a battle with the Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners, who have near similar records as them.
