Pat Mahomes Sr., a former Major League Baseball player who was with the New York Mets in 1999 and 2020, has a special connection to the sport of baseball and its intersection with football. And his son, Patrick Mahomes, is the star quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The football sensation has been immersed in the world of professional sports since a young age. At just 4 years old, he was already out there on the field thanks to his father. Patrick had been catching fly balls in the ballpark at a young age. In a recent podcast, Mahomes Sr. reminisced about those early days.

According to a NY Post podcast, Pat Mahomes Sr. has a story to tell about his son, Patrick Mahomes, and their time with the New York Mets. When Pat Sr. played for the team, he would bring 4-year-old Patrick with him, much to the concern of the then-manager, Bobby Valentine. Bobby was worried that the young boy might get hurt on the field, but Patrick quickly put those fears to rest.

This is how Pat Sr. narrated the manager’s concern, “I would take him out to the field and Bobby called me in the office and he’s like ‘hey, he’s a little small to be going out there’ and I was like he’ll be alright, I’ll be around him, whatever, and he goes ‘Well when you all gotta do stuff, do different things who’s gonna be out there with him? He might get hit,’ and I say well, I can tell you one thing, Bob. If he gets hit, I promise you he won’t do it again so he’s gonna be okay.”

Pat Sr. then continued, “Bobby saw him out there running around and tracking the balls and have an idea what he was doing. He was like, okay, that’s fine, he’s in. And we went from there.”

And so, the young Patrick was welcomed onto the field, proving himself to be a natural, even at such a young age. It was a defining moment for the future NFL superstar. Pat Sr. proudly looks back on those early days.
What if Patrick Mahomes II was in baseball?
Patrick Mahomes, the sensational quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, will take the field against the Philadelphia Eagles very soon. But it leaves to the imagination what would’ve it been like if Patrick had pursued baseball instead of football. In 2015, Patrick was even selected as the 37th-round pick of the Detroit Tigers.
