Well, well, well… If the New York Mets’ season were a Hollywood blockbuster, Pete Alonso might be the unexpected lead stealing this show right now. While all eyes were glued to Juan Soto and his massive $765 million contract, it’s Polar Bear who is quietly (or not so quietly) turning heads with his performances. One swing at a time!
After a rather rocky off-season, where Alonso, after asking the moon and the stars, settled for a humble two-year, $54 million deal, he is letting his bat do the talking. And how! His bat has been nothing but loud. He hit .344 with 43 hits to kick off 2025. He isn’t just leading the offense; he has become the heartbeat of it. Crazy to think that he had one leg out of New York, isn’t it?
But how long he will remain there is a big question—he even has an opt-out after this season. Weighing in on the same, ESPN’s Jeff Passan dropped a bombshell forecast.

The MLB Insider opined that Pete Alonso is a $100 million man at a minimum. Even $200 isn’t far-fetched. “Alonso has put himself comfortably into the $100 million category with a shot at $200 million, assuming he opts out of his current deal after the season,” said Passan at ESPN. That number is no joke for a first baseman, let alone someone in his 30s.

First baseman isn’t a position that many teams roll out the red carpet for. However, given that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. just managed to get a half-billion deal with the Toronto Blue Jays as a first baseman, the market now stands changed.
Vladdy is indeed a lot younger than Alonso, but the New York Mets slugger’s power is elite. Passan also insisted that it’s hard to ignore the power and the durability Pete Alonso has. And get this—he has more walks than strikeouts this year! So while Steve Cohen might want to keep Alonso in Flushing, the market will have a keen eye on him. And if Alonso hits the free-agent market, the floodgates to a better deal will open up for sure.

Pete Alonso is becoming the face of the New York Mets
If you have been watching the New York Mets this season, you already know that Pete Alonso is on fire. But he is not just that guy in the field; he is also getting that attention in the clubhouse. While names like Juan Soto and manager Carlos Mendoza still headline, it’s Alonso that reporters are lining up to talk to after the games. And Pete Alonso is not giving the reporters some cookie-cutter replies. He is finally opening up, being himself.

After a tight win with the Diamondbacks, talking about his hot streak, he said, “I think the consistency comes with understanding. And I feel like I’m starting to really understand my body and what it’s capable of.” He is not just swinging; he is fine-tuning it. And watching him, you can tell. “I feel like I’m locked into my mechanics and fully in control of my body right now. If something’s off, I make the adjustment and move on… I’m not perfect, but I feel like I’m myself out there every pitch,” he told the reporters.
This growth is not just his fans; even teammates like Francisco Lindor are noticing. He doesn’t throw out casual praise. But talking about him, he said, “He’s become more of a high-average hitter with power, rather than just a pure power hitter. He looks fantastic right now.” Earning praise from your teammates is no piece of cake after all! So that just says that he is leading both on and off the field. So next time he will not take a $100 million blow, and reunite – that’s for sure.
