Context On the Mystery of Alonso’s Contract Talks

To answer that question, let’s sprinkle in some context. Well, earlier this January, the Mets agreed to a new one-year contract with Pete Alonso. It was a procedural necessity as ‘Polar Bear’ headed into his final season of team control. Alonso, who was eligible for arbitration (a third and last time), okayed a $20.5 million contract per source. Last season, he earned $14.5 million through the process of arbitration.

2024 would be the final year of team control for Alonso. 2023’s stats show that he hit .217/.318/.504, 46 homers and 118 RBIs. Sure, there has been a mutual interest from both sides, but no concrete indications have come to light that reflects a closure on the extension. Understandably so, negotiations, more often than not, involve strategic maneuvering and calculated silence. One must wait and watch.
