The New York Yankees have been eliminated from the playoff contention. One can either owe it to their poor performance or a series of injuries. Either way, the Bronx Bombers suffered a fateful season. There is however a twist, this elimination comes with a rather impressive achievement.

New York has been one of the premier teams of MLB and they have rightly showcased it over the years. While many question the current quality of the team, they proved their prowess by making a record in an attempt to rebound from their abject plight. Isn’t it bizarre that ‘best record’ and ‘elimination from the playoffs’ go hand in hand for the Yankees?

In a recent tweet by @MaxTGoodman, he highlighted that the Yankees have made a phenomenal score since August 28. A 17-9 score that the Yanks currently stand at, is the best record in MLB in that period. Despite that, on Monday, New York closed out their home schedule with a 6-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. So, what difference does that make at this point?

The 27 World Series championships have put in commendable efforts in an attempt to turn their fate around in 2023. Be it by releasing third baseman Josh Donaldson or introducing young talent like outfielder Jasson Dominguez and shortstop Oswald Peraza who have proved their might. Under the leadership of the victory-hungry Aaron Judge, the team picked up pace even creating a winning streak of 5 games. But, too little too late?

The Yanks currently stand damaged beyond repair. This marks the first time for manager Aaron Boone in six seasons that the Yankees are not taking part in the postseason. He said, “ In my mind, I’m doing everything to head into the offseason prepared to put us in a better position to try and compete for a championship. That’s what the goal is, and until they take that away, that’s my focus.” A sad time to be in since 2016.

Their absence in the playoffs took place after 6 long glorious years, their first miss since 2016. As of now, the Yankees have only 6 more games left in the regular season. With a statistically impossible chance to win, they shift their focus to the 2024 ensuing season.

Captain, Aaron Judge said, “It’s not gonna happen overnight, so we gotta hit the ground running, especially when the season ends. We got a lot to work on, a lot of things to change, and a lot of stuff going on around here that needs to be fixed”. Quite ambitious, no?
