Spring training is almost over, and every baseball fan is gearing up for the regular season. But as always, this March hasn’t been kind to many players as injuries take a front seat in their lives. One such player is the Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman, Rhys Hoskins. One of the few players that have been with the team for a long while now, the 30-year-old is a beloved clubhouse member.

This is Hoskins’ last contract year and instead of spending it on the field, the Phillies player will spend it in surgery and recovery. Baseball officials have been getting a lot of heat about injuries and the World Baseball Classic this year. Some people wanted the WBC to be canceled since players got injured before the regular season started. But Hoskins’ case just goes to show spring training isn’t a walk in the park, either.

It’s a severe blow to the team. The incident took place during a game of Phillies vs Tigers when Hoskins was running back to first base in the second inning. He suddenly dropped the ball and fell to the ground, clutching his left knee. Talkin’ Baseball on Twitter announced the news with a picture that showed Hoskins on the ground, surrounded by worried teammates.

Several hours later, FOX Sports officially announced that the first baseman will require surgery, particularly an ACL reconstruction. The news is perhaps made worse by the fact that earlier in the offseason, Hoskins just had meniscus surgery in his right knee.

Is the team equipped to handle Hoskins’ absence?

While the first baseman’s stats aren’t the most stellar, he’s still a valuable player. He batted .246 with 30 home runs and 79 RBIs last season and was an important factor that led the team to the World Series. Now that he’s out for the count in 2023, the Phillies have some good internal options that could be used.
