A baseball player like Shohei Ohtani is the discovery of a lifetime. Ohtani’s standout feature is his unique ability to smash the ball with an equal amount of perfection as he pitches. A two-way player on the constant rise. Ohtani is a genuine crowd-puller, playing for a team up to no good. While the Los Angeles Angels deal with the ‘Shohei Ohtani trade-off’ dilemma, he is more focused on performing for the Angels. At least for the time being.

Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese born MLB megastar. Nicknamed ‘Shotime’, Ohtani is famous for his extraordinary entertaining skills. Ohtani is a rare composition of a designated hitter, starting pitcher, and outfielder. Drafted into MLB by the Los Angeles Angels in 2018, Shohei Ohtani previously played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Nippon Professional Baseball’s Pacific League.

Since his inception into the team, Shohei Ohtani has been the much-needed light for the Angels. A fact that was highlighted again on Ohtani’s last outing with the Angels against the Texas Rangers was that playing as the starting pitcher, Ohtani did everything possible to give his team a shot at victory. But alas, that still wasn’t the case for the Angels, as victory eluded them on yet another occasion.

Shohei Ohtani is still an Angel at the moment

Having won nine games for the Angels as a starting pitcher, Shohei Ohtani is looking for his tenth win. But given the Angels’ miserable ongoing form, it’s unknown how soon Ohtani will have ten or more pitching wins this season. The Angels are a team that keeps finding ways to jump into the jaws of defeat. A player like Ohtani surely deserves to be in a better team setting.

With a 42-58 count on the win-loss record, the Angels are out of any title contention. Losing seven of their last ten games explains how poorly the team is performing. In his last game, Shohei Ohtani pitched six innings, conceding only two runs and striking out 11 batters. The game was balanced courtesy of Ohtani’s pitching excellence. But a fragile offense blew away all chances for the Angels, as the Rangers registered a thrilling victory.

Despite the Angels persistently slipping further down the ladder, Shohei Ohtani appeared to be non-committal, speaking on trade matters after the game. According to a source, Ohtani said through his interpreter, “Regardless of where I’m playing, I want to give it my all, try to win the ballgame that’s right in front of me. I’m with the Angels right now. And I’m very thankful for what they’ve done. I really love the team. I love my teammates. Right now I’m an Angel, and that’s all I can really focus on at this point.”

Meanwhile, talking about Ohtani, the Angels manager Phil Nevin said, “That streak that he went on for quite a long time, up until the last inning of his last start. Knowing every pitch has a small margin for error because of what our offense has been. Makes it even more impressive what he does.”

Shohei Ohtani’s future with the franchise

Excluding some exceptional performances from Shohei Ohtani and a handful of other players, the Angels have failed as a unit. So it’s obvious that Ohtani will eventually desire to offer his gifted talent to a champion team. As of now, Ohtani might seem to hang out with the Angels for a while. But the Angels must remember that Ohtani is not an Angels player forever unless he says so.

Therefore, the Angels have got three options now. Either extend Ohtani’s contract with a much larger sum of money. Or else build a stronger team around him, filled with consistent match-winners. But if it happens to be impossible to afford Ohtani any longer, then trade off with someone just as good. Which way do you think the Angels will go?
