Something happened to Arizona after Games 1 and 2 of the NLCS. Philadelphia Phillies’ 5-3 and 10-0 victories have seemingly crushed the Arizona Diamondbacks’ spirits. So much so that they were not willing to witness another game. This led to a strange outcome on the ticketing front.

Phoenix sports fans seemed to have returned to focus on the Arizona Diamondbacks after their surprising run to the National League Championship Series. However, after just two games in their NLCS matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies, they look to have completely squandered that goodwill. Fans at Chase Field experienced a ‘cheap thrill’ in Phoenix.

Stark differences in ticket prices

Though the D-Backs won Game 3, 2-1, there weren’t enough fans to witness it. On independent websites, fans bought game tickets for as cheap as $15 on Thursday, saving 90% over the $115 original cost. On the other hand, according to Reuters, Game 1’s ‘get-in’ fee at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Ballpark was over a whopping $450. What was unbelievable was that the lowest-priced ticket for Game 2 in Philadelphia was fifteen times more expensive than the lowest-priced ticket for Game 3 in Arizona. With that out in the open, the fans of Philadelphia could not stay quiet.

Given the cheap tickets, Philly-phandom made the decision to ensure that Diamondback supporters would no longer have to put up with the NLCS suffering. Phillies fans started purchasing tickets so that Diamondback fans couldn’t attend the games, which upped their ‘spirit-breaking’ game a whole notch. And with that, they took advantage of a petty privilege.

Dan Bickley, co-host of Bickley & Marotta from Arizona Sports spoke about the wrong kind of red dominating Chase Field. He said, “Decent sports towns have some guidelines, like: They do not quit on a team that is trailing two games to zip in a championship series, and that seems to be the backdrop, if not the soundtrack, of today’s Game 3 at Chase Field”. Arizona received the optics with an ‘Ouch!’. Rightly so, the fans have opened up about what they think of this raging disparity in ticket prices.
