The New York Yankees fans are some of the most unhinged of the lot. While their passion stems from a place of loyal fan-following, they can be unabashedly critical when the team falters. Well, a fan rekindled an “unpopular opinion” that he gave in 2023, sending waves of discomfort among other fellow fans. Yet again!

Here’s what happened. Back on 4/14/23, Patrick Hennesy, an ardent Yankees fan took to Twitter to share how he felt looking at Anthony Volpe smile after the team performed disappointingly. Not only did other fans bash him for his words, but also asked him to, “Get a life.” In fact, even Marcus Stroman tweeted back. So what were his words anyway?

Fandom Taken Too Far At Anthony Volpe’s Autograph Signing?

The tweet that led other fans and even Stroman to criticize this man read, “Unpopular opinion: Anthony Volpe smiling ear to ear in his postgame interview after the Yankees worst loss of the season really annoys me.” What riled up the public was that the 22-year-old had just hit his first career home run. But the bashing does not end there.

Last year when Stroman stumbled upon the same fan’s tweet when he criticized Volpe for smiling, the 32-year-old did not miss the moment to call it out. His words were, “Patrick…you’re a loser. He hit his first homerun in the big leagues. Something you will never accomplish. Keep it down and take your negativity back to your miserable life.” With that, not only did Stro change the narrative about him not liking the Yankees, but also taught a brash fan a lesson.

And then, almost a year later on 3/28/24, Patrick, the fan, brought the tweet out, printed it and took it to Anthony Volpe’s signing. A bold move.

Though the shortstop hesitated to sign it, he smiled ear to ear and politely declined saying, “Uh if you get something else I’ll sign it”. When this clip came out, Volpe supporters rose to speak, just like how Stro had done a year ago.

Questions rise, was this just for fun or was there actually any fandom in this act?

Well, it’s tough to say. On one hand, there is a fan who wanted to do something apparently funny. But that backfired not only with Volpe and his team, but also with fellow fans.
