It’s about time the New York Yankees instill fear in the hearts of their opponents. After an embarrassing 2023 season that witnessed them miss the playoffs for the first time in six years, the world expects a significant rebound in 2024. In an attempt to bolster their lineup, they made a blockbuster acquisition of superstar Juan Soto. Also, they added pitching depth with Marcus Stroman and held onto their core players nurturing them to be their best. Despite that, there comes a twist.

A respected baseball website made a prediction that seems unexpected. So what was their response? Well, by predicting a disastrous season they have left the Yankees fans feeling like they’d wandered into a parallel universe. Social media is filled with fan comments which gives one food for thought.

Baseball Reference, a popular statistics website, has predicted the Bronx Bombers to finish dead last in the stacked American League East. What’s more dismaying is that the prediction is “at roughly 72-90”. This would be lower than even the Baltimore Orioles making their championship aspirations a distant reality. The best-case scenario painted by Baseball Reference isn’t exactly inspiring either – a repetition of their sub-par 2023 performance  – 82-80.

Needless to say, Yankee fans are not buying it. There has been a raging buzz with disbelief and anger. While there are most comments expressing frustration with the harsh projection, many still believe that there could be some truth to it. Afterall, baseball is pretty unpredictable. Amid the cacophony one must not forget that the Soto acquisition and a healthy Aaron Judge are all reasons for optimism. So is there really anything to worry about at all? Perhaps not.
