WATCH: Ex-Reds Manager Pete Rose Once Nearly Blew Up During Interview After ‘Gambling Addict’ Accusation: ‘I Don’t Know Where You Got That At!’

Pete Rose grew to have a very successful career. He debuted with the Cincinnati Reds in 1963 and played with them for 15 years until 1978. He went back to the Reds as a player-manager in 1984 and retired as a player in 1986. During his 23-year-long career, he appeared in seventeen All-Star teams and won 3 World Championships. The Reds also retired his jersey number 14 and added him to their Hall of Fame.

Despite his extremely fruitful run as a player, his career as a manager was filled with controversy, gambling, and drama. In 1989, Rose faced accusations of being involved in betting on baseball games. Due to these allegations, Rose’s name made the permanently ineligible list in baseball. Essentially, it meant that he had to part ways with the world of baseball.

How did Pete Rose respond to accusations of being a gambling addict?

In an interview from 2017 with journalist Graham Bensinger, Pete Rose, was almost accusingly asked, “What message would you have to somebody who’s presently a gambling addict and knows deep down that they want to stop but are unsure how to?”

To this Rose responded by saying, “I don’t know anything about that because I always thought I was in control.” Rose who’s now evidently irritated went on to add, “All of a sudden, it sounds to me like you think I’m an addict. I don’t know where you got that at!”

While saying that he was always in control, Rose said, “I could control what I was doing. I just, I was wrong, I got caught.” He finally answered Graham’s question and said, “If you’re an addict, go get help.”

Pete’s life after baseball

Pete Rose had an extremely successful 23-year-long career. However, post-retirement, his gambling and betting scandals made the headlines and stole the spotlight away from his career achievements. Pete Rose’s baseball career ended when accusations of him betting on baseball games while managing the Reds took over. These accusations also cost him his Hall of Fame.
