While ups and downs are inevitable, making an appropriate decision for the team comes before anything else. In a move by the New York Yankees, fans have been left to speculate on what might lie ahead for the team. Consistent poor performance has consequences; what happened to the 2015 MVP is the best example.

Acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Twins before the 2022 season,  Josh Donaldson is now set to make his way out of the Yankees. Caught amidst on-field controversies and not to mention injuries, it is safe to say that this was the most anticipated release of this season. The questions linger: Was it needed? Or was this action long due already?

Injuries Cost Josh Donaldson More Than He Expected

Injuries are understandable but Josh was writing an outright disappointing legacy for the Yankees. The 37-Year-Old has missed most of this season owing to his injuries. The three-time All-Star was on the IL from April 5 to June 2 because of a strained right hamstring. Then on July 16 he made it to the IL for straining his calf. Four days after that, he moved to the 60-day IL. Following a couple of highly unproductive two seasons, third baseman Josh Donaldson was recently released by Yankees.

“Coming out of the lockout, I think might have been a little bit behind physically last year, and then he had some struggles,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone on Tuesday. “Felt like he came in a really good place this spring and then got hurt pretty early on, and then came back and obviously was hitting long balls.”

Donaldson hit a total of 25 home runs spanning across two seasons since he was acquired from Minnesota in March 2022. He played only one season’s worth of games with the Yankees. While he was brought in with the intention of complementing Aaron Judge, he ended up being a drag for the team. Well, it’s also hard to ignore how heavy he was on their pocket with a $92 million worth. Evidently, having him on the team has cost the Yankees more than just money.
