The 2023 MLB season has indeed earned a nickname of a ‘season of unexpected twists and turns.’ But for the New York Yankees, the season has been shocking and disappointing. A team filled with stars has failed miserably. They have started the second half with losses, placing themselves in the last spot in the AL East. Amid such disappointing streak, there are high hopes vested in this season especially for Yankees.

Even though the mid-tabled Angels swept the Yankees for the first time in 14 years, the wave of losses has not deterred the hopes of World Series playoffs. Instead, it has raised the bar of hopes high because of a superstition that goes back to the Yankees’ championship-winning season.

Angels 2023 sweep brings back Yankees 2009 glory
It has not been a season that the Yankees wanted. They have lost against the Angels but also faced a sweep since 2009. It happened after the Angels won the third game with a score of 7-3. The star performer of this win was none other than Shohei Ohtani. Foul Territory focused on the same in their Twitter post. It read, “Angels sweep the Yankees for the first time since 2009!”

Though the Ohtani screams of joy could indicate the end of the season for the Yankees, there is still silver lining.

The Pinstripes won their last world series in 2009 and are hoping to achieve it again this year. All thanks to the superstition of winning the championship after a sweep at the hands of the Angels. Interestingly, it happened in the year 2009 with the likes of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez were party to it. Could the Yankees make a similar comeback?

The New York Yankees could still turn around their season
Though the Yankees have not played well, the situation could be better. They could still make it to the postseason as wildcards or direct entrants.
The latest ranking suggests the Pinstripes are 3.5 games behind the last wild card spot. And for the direct playoffs spot, they are nine games behind. And only a streak of excellent results could change it. Also, the New York Yankees are familiar with it.

They trailed 14 games in the AL East decades back and won 52 of their remaining 73 games to win the division.
With the returnees in the team like Carlos Rodon, and the addition of Oswald Peraza, the team can do this again. With Aaron Judge scheduled to join, the Yankees can repeat the 1978 comeback and add more to the 2009 superstition.
