Brandon Vera Praises ONE’s Heavyweight Division, Targets Return in Q3

Former ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera feels that the talent level in his division is through the roof thanks to the highly skilled collection of competitive warriors. 

Apart from the Filipino-American, one of the most iconic heavyweights of his generation, the weight class is brimming with marquee fighters such as current ONE Heavyweight World Champion Arjan “Singh” Bhullar, Anatoly “Sladkiy” Malykhin, Kirill Grishenko, Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida, “Mighty Warrior” Kang Ji Won, and Amir Aliakbari.

“We have plenty of amazing heavyweights that deserve a title shot and the limelight. Everyone’s looking good in the heavyweight division,” the 44-year-old said.

Vera, who last competed against Bhullar at ONE: DANGAL, wants to return to the global stage. But he doesn’t have a preferred foe for his return due to the level of competition.

However, the Alliance Training Center star revealed that he still has his eyes on the world title he once owned and is willing to take on anyone until he gets another shot at the belt. 

“Man, everyone in the heavyweight division has my interest, my undivided interest. There are no easy scraps, there are no easy rounds, not in the heavyweight division right now,” the Virginia native offered.

“Everyone’s got fire and [is] bringing the heat. So, anyone. Whoever I’m competing against next, when I finish them, I’m going to ask for a rematch [with Arjan]. Or ask for a shot at the belt against whoever is holding it at that time. World on notice, just so you know.”

With “Singh” reportedly turning down multiple offers to defend his crown, ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced this past December that Malykhin and Grishenko will battle for the ONE Interim Heavyweight World Title at ONE: ONLY THE BRAVE on Friday, 28 January.

The promotion’s inaugural heavyweight world champion will be analyzing this fight and the world title unification fight that might take place later this year. The former United States Air Force enlistee also targets a comeback by the second half of 2022. 

“I’ve talked to [the] management and ONE Championship, and I’m expecting to be back in the Circle Q3 or Q4 of this year, so we’re just on standby getting ready the whole time.”
