Joe Rogan is known to some as the podcast host who secured a whopping $100 million deal with Spotify. To others, he is a stand-up comedian, and a select few know him as a mixed martial art fanatic who commentates at UFC events.

Rogan is a man of many talents and is one of the biggest figures in MMA. He has been with the UFC since its nascent stages. However, something that most people might not know is that Joe Rogan is a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. The podcast host earned his belt under Eddie Bravo’s 10th planet Jiu-Jitsu program, yet he doesn’t compete in tournaments.

Joe Rogan on his “Obsession” with competition

Rogan was asked why he does not participate competitively in the sport despite having a black belt and an ocean of knowledge.

He replied, “No for that very reason. I don’t want to get obsessed. I had to quit video games when we were playing video games at the studio. Because I was playing 5 hours a day out of nowhere… I get obsessed with things. I have to recognize what that is. And these competitive things like real exciting competitive things like video games, they’re very dangerous for me. The ultimate competitive video game is Jiu-Jitsu.”

Rogan added, “If I was young, I most certainly would’ve done it. If I didn’t have a very clear career path. It was something I enjoyed. My concern would be that I would become a professional Jiu-Jitsu fighter when I was young. Then I would not have the energy to do stand-up and all the other things I wound up doing as a career.”

Rogan mentioned that from the age of 15 to 22 he was “obsessed with martial arts” and practiced diligently. He also revealed that the “competitive demon” in him would not allow room for other activities. If he were to take up any sport professionally, he would not have the time to devote to the other things that he holds dear to his heart.
