Recently, defending Cup Series champion Joey Logano spoke about the Next Gen cars. Already in the second season, the Next Gen car is still a divisive topic for drivers. Unfortunately, Logano’s latest comments pointed toward another negative aspect of the cars. It is also interesting to note that he compared the cars to IndyCar and F1 cars. His main gripe was that drivers could tear up their cars without facing too many consequences.
Logano told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, “When you have a car like we have now, and the Xfinity cars are no different, even the trucks don’t seem that bad, but there, you can bump into each other. If you used to do that in the past, the way we bump each other, the nose gets bent in and wrinkled up. So you couldn’t afford to do that. Or you get fenders knocked in and it cut a tire down.
“There’s no fender rubs any more. The bumpers are big enough to push down a freaking house, so that’s no big deal. So why don’t you do it? There’s no risk.”

Joey Logano speaks about how NASCAR used to be in the old days
Joey Logano made the inevitable comparison to how different the sport is in the modern era. Logano even touched upon the Truck Series vehicles and the Xfinity Series cars. His observation was that, in the past, any kind of contact would severely hamper the car’s ability to drive smoothly and quickly.
He continued, “You used to get ticked off if someone just touched you. Because you knew if you get a fender rub, it’ll knock your fenders in and you’re scr*wed now. It used to make you so mad. And now it’s a little doink on the side; no big deal, keep going. It doesn’t bother me anymore.
“So when you have cars like you have now, we need something to protect us from ourselves. We realize how durable these things are. That’s what happened at the Clash too, we all know we’re driving these tanks and we can hit things.”

Comparing the Next Gen cars with the cars in F1 and Indycar, he said, “That is why IndyCars and F1 cars don’t run into each other because their cars fall apart. They really can’t afford to touch each other, and they get mad when they do.
“We went far the other way.

When you go to the rental go-kart places and they’ve got the bumpers that go all the way around the tires. What does everyone do? Clobber each other, because you can. To be that is the big thing and so because we have cars like that, we probably need to relook at the rules. We’ve changed our cars so we need to change the rules.”

In essence, he was suggesting that since the IndyCar and F1 cars are more expensive, the drivers are more careful. Unfortunately, the NASCAR stock cars are less expensive and a lot more durable than the cars of the other two series. Admittedly, last year was a bit of an exception, because the cars were relatively new and spare parts were very scarce. However, the Next Gen cars have become even more sturdy now.
