NASCAR Cup Series stars have had to tough it out in the Chili Bowl. Following Kyle Larson‘s surprising outing on Thursday night, fellow Cup Series star Ricky Stenhouse Jr has followed suit. Larson suffered from two flips, the latter derailing his pursuit of a third Golden Driller trophy. On the other hand, Stenhouse Jr was forced to subdue his attempt after a mechanical issue.

Speaking to eminent journalist Matt Weaver, the JTG Daugherty Racing driver opened up on how his elimination in the Chili Bowl’s C1 race unfolded. Having to pass through the alphabetical soup to qualify for the Midget Cars main event, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. would have hoped to perform better than on his previous outing with Keith Kunz Motorsports.

Having missed the 2023 edition of the Chili Bowl, the 2023 Daytona 500 winner took Kyle Larson’s phone call to Keith Kunz as an example and initiated a return. Having participated in 17 Chili Bowl races with three top-10 finishes, experience was never an issue for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. After he finished 23rd on Friday night, he wanted to recover from the busted front end and qualify for the A-Main.

Having won in the E1-Main, Stenhouse Jr was high on confidence. It reflected in the D1-Main race as he pushed back to the qualifying spot from 16th in the grid. However, a mechanical issue in the C1-Main ended his hopeful run to compete alongside the top contenders for the Golden Driller with a P18 finish.

Speaking to Matt Weaver about a painful end to his solid run, Ricky Stenhouse Jr revealed his feelings about what went wrong. “I’m not really sure. I thought we had a good start. Just the caliber of the cars went up, and then, we had a wreck with a shock issue there about halfway through, and I was kind of running at the bottom and then pulled it in. So lot of fun, glad to be back here.”

However, among the NASCAR drivers competing for the prestigious trophy, no one fared better than Ricky Stenhouse Jr either.

Apart from Larson and Stenhouse Jr, other NASCAR drivers participated in the 2024 Chili Bowl Nationals. Richard Childress Racing prodigy and Xfinity Series recruit Jesse Love was involved in a wreck on Thursday night. Owing to that, he started in P12 in the E2-Main race. Despite having a final chance to progress to the A-Main, he finished 14th to finish his tourney.

Cup Series drivers JJ Yeley and Josh Bilicki were also part of the tourney. Yeley won the G2-Main after a P5 start to advance to the F2-Main. However, like Ricky Stenhouse Jr, a mechanical issue in the car ruined Yeley’s race. A 19th-place finish in the F2-Main ended his hopes of any chance for a main event appearance.

Josh Bilicki, on the other hand, was lucky to walk away from a dangerous tumble on Friday night. Following that, he qualified for the N1-Main race after a P3 finish in the O1-Main race earlier on Saturday. He eventually finished 7th in the N1-Main with no hopes for the M-Main.

Compared to the previous editions of the Golden Driller, NASCAR drivers have failed to make a solid impression this time. The sole ray of hope was Chase Briscoe, who qualified for the A-Main. However, a P21 finish in the A-Main means no Golden Driller trophies for NASCAR drivers this year.

One take at a time

I instantly fell in love with the sport as I witnessed the cars' breakneck speeds and the robust nature of the sport and its drivers. As I had a deep-rooted interest in automobiles, the sport naturally piqued my interest in a jiffy. Kyle Busch and his cutthroat style of racing played an important role in getting me hooked to stock car racing as I hopped on streams to watch him win races.
