Of late, the scenarios inside the Cup Series grid of NASCAR seem to resemble a game of chess. Although it may sound condescending, teams in order to realize their dreams and to give them shape are ready to gamble their pawns and protect their queen. While this may seem an indispensable part of any competitive sport in its highest format, the only element that acts as a spoilsport and upset in laying the future groundwork for the teams is nothing but a retirement announcement.

Drawing from the aforementioned context, it is evident that the teams in the Cup Series are ready to orchestrate future propositions for the betterment of the team and make them viable in securing championships. Following the same dictum, it is apparent that Joe Gibbs Racing is trying to tie the loose ends and reach a resolution and finalize its roster of drivers for the 2024 Cup Series season and also the rebranded team Legacy Motor Club.

This collective variability stems from one common subject; whether Martin Truex Jr would race his way into the 2024 season or will he call it a day and hang his helmet. Moreover, if Truex Jr decides to call it quits, who shall replace him in his No.19, given the fact Legacy Motor Club is set to replace its rookie driver, Noah Gragson?

Will Noah Gragson relinquish his seat to the championship contender John Hunter Nemechek?

While Stewart-Haas has already set the tone for the 2024 season, it seems that teams like Joe Gibbs Racing and Legacy Motor Club are treading on the same ground. To make a case for the rebranded team co-owned by the freshly inducted Hall of Famer Jimmie Johnson, Legacy Motor Club is set to depart from the golden bowtie manufacturer and join Toyota from the next season onwards. Moreover, it is not just the shift in manufacturing brand that has made headlines for LMC, but also the possibility of replacing its rookie driver, Noah Gragson.

Gragson, in his first year as a Cup Series driver, has faltered to translate and carry over his victories from his Xfinity Series in the last season. Representing JR Motorsports in the feeder series, Gragson had 8 victories in his net and just fell a step short of winning the championship. However, driving the No.42, Gragson sits at the bottom berth of the points, standing with a marginal hope of entering the playoffs. His only noteworthy finish was when he finished 12th at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Although the onus of his underperformance doesn’t completely fall on Gragson’s shoulders, but also the constant rebuilding of the organization. Nevertheless, if the team chooses to part ways with the driver, the only contender for the team is assuredly John Hunter Nemechek, from the Xfinity Series representing Joe Gibbs Racing. While these conjectures are in their formative state with no formal declaration, industry insiders asserted the fact it was Toyota that is keen on retaining the driver under its banner.

The 26-year-old seems to be a favorable choice of a replacement for LMC the fact, that the driver has already gained a year of experience in the elite format, before being dropped back to the lower formats. Moreover, Nemechek has portrayed a stellar performance in the current Xfinity series and is a favorable title contender for the season.

Martin Truex Jr’s dilemma poses a threat to the Xfinity driver

However, the road to Cup Series may not be easy as it may seem for the Xfinity driver, with numerous underlying caveats, one being the retirement possibility of Martin Truex Jr after the 2023 Cup Series season. The No.19 Toyota driver, after being winless for a year, made a worthy comeback in the ongoing season and clinched three victories, but that doesn’t ascertain the probability of Truex Jr racing for another season.

Even though Coach Gibbs has tried to coax his driver into his seat, however, the question of hanging his helmet has always been on the table. Moreover, NASCAR insiders felt that it might not be surprising if he announced his retirement. Kim Coon had asserted, “I do think that Martin’s spoken about it that it’s not just a ‘show up and race’ kind of situation. You’re doing your homework, watching competitions early in the weekend video, notes, SMT data […]”

Furthermore, there have been speculations across Twitter that Nemechek might act as a replacement for both Gragson and Truex Jr. One netizen wrote, “John Hunter Nemechek takes over the #42 for Legacy Motor Club who are joining the Toyota family. This isn’t long term though as JHN only drives the #42 for LMC until Martin Truex Jr retires, afterwards JHN moves over to Joe Gibbs Racing and the #19 is rebranded to the #18.”

However, the burning question that arises at this juncture is, if neither of the drivers is replaced, will Nemechek’s Cup Series will come crashing down, or will another team would be able to accommodate him for the next season?
