The Super GT at Suzuka turned out to be a nightmare for Nissan’s Tsugio Matsuda
The Suzuka tracks hosted the Super GT championship 450km race on Sunday when the deadly incident occurred between Nissan’s Tsugio Matsuda and Lamborghini’s Kosuke Matsuura.
The race was called off after 59 laps were completed out of a total of 77 laps, owing to the severity of the crash. The incident occurred when Matsuda tried to pursue Hiramine’s Impul car, who clearly felt the pressure from the Nissan driver. In an attempt to overtake but was caught in chicane between Lamborghini’s Matsurra and Toyota’s Orido.

Trying to exit at a high speed, the Nissan made contact with Orido’s Toyota and sent Tsugio Matsuda directly colliding with the outside wall, after losing control of the car and send reeling into the air, completely destroying the car. And caught in the crossfire was Lamborghini’s Matsurra. He hit the barriers but was able to control his car and stop just before the racing line.
With the crash, the safety cars were immediately deployed on the tracks and the race was red-flagged. It was Nissan’s Matsuda who had suffered the worst and had to be extricated from his car. However, he was in his conscious state and was able to communicate with the medics on the track before being flown to the hospital in a helicopter. While Lamborghini’s Matsuura was unharmed and could limp back to his garage on his own accord.
It was later reported by the authorities that Matsuda did not sustain major injuries and was out of harm’s way.

The severity of the crash can be gauged by the fact that the cars were going at over 150 mph. Hope this driver recovers quickly, while the authorities should look into the fact and make an effort to minimize such occurrences from happening in the future.
