Recently, Kyle Petty and Steve Letarte expressed their concerns about Rick Hendrick and his team, suggesting that they have adopted a new strategy focused on merely finishing races instead of aiming for victory. It appears that these discussions may hold some truth, as none of the HMS drivers, except for Kyle Larson, secured 7th. Chase Elliott and William Byron were involved in crashes, while Alex Bowman finished in 14th position.
Interestingly, William Byron and Denny Hamlin discussed the difficulties posed by turn 4 on the track. Surprisingly, Byron himself experienced a crash at the same corner during qualifying. Before delving into Byron’s strong words directed towards HMS, let us explore the reasons why he issued a warning to his team before the race.

The 2.14-mile racetrack, featuring 12 turns, presented several challenges for drivers as they struggled to maintain control of their cars. The track’s bumpy surface added a layer of difficulty, making it even more demanding. These conditions made it challenging for drivers to execute successful overtakes. During the Actions Detrimental podcast, 3x winner in this season said, “Ah, that’s tough. I mean, I think it’s going to be hard to pass. I don’t think there’s going to be any passing.”
He continued, “Yeah, bumpy, off-camber kind of corners but yeah I haven’t run enough to know what it’s like but I know turn 4 is like a fast right-hander that goes off-camber, I think there’s going to be a lot of turbulence there, a lot of left rears.”
Surprisingly, during the second round of qualifying, as he approached the very same turn 4 that he and Hamlin had discussed, he collided with the wall while exiting the turn, resulting in damage to the left-rear toe link of his car. Thankfully, although his car was damaged, Byron himself remained uninjured.
In a post-race interview with Bob Pockrass, Byron revealed the cause of his crash and shed light on the overall struggles of Hendrick Motorsports.

He continued, “We were able to fix the tail thing to make laps but the way the car was handling was not very good up to that point I was really optimistic.” Byron acknowledged his mistake and outlined his intentions to improve, saying, “I just have to learn how to feel a little less excited and ease into it because it seems like Bristol Dirt way first won then hit the wall so got to do a better job my end to not be an idiot.”
