Leadership programs across all disciplines are quite in vogue in contemporary times. Whether it’s related to managing corporate organizations or preaching to the younger generation and leading them about the complexities of life, leaders are an intangible part of the modern functioning of the world. But not everything can be found in printed hardcovers and can be practical functioning. And if any individual is in dire need of a leader to learn from, then they can surely look up to the crew chiefs of NASCAR.

These individuals are not only adept at coming up with strategies for races. At the core, these individuals are effective leaders. They dexterously handle and execute every incident with great wisdom.

Partnered with a capable driver, they can surely be termed as a match made in heaven, as they have the power to make or break a race at any given point. While a successful duo can fetch championships, the opposite can prove to be detrimental for both the team and the driver as well. A hint of this could be found in Dale Earnhardt Jr’s voice on Ask Jr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr Spills the Beans on His Grim Racing Days Because of a Crew Chief

It can certainly be asserted that Dale Earnhardt Jr is perhaps one of the greatest drivers that has ever taken a seat in the world of stock car racing. And more often than not, Junior is compared with his father, but he has never let the past incidents overshadow his present and especially his performance on the track.

However, there have been instances when racing days for the former driver may have been grim, and for which one can also thank his former crew chief. Not trying to reveal the name, Dale Jr expressed, “We had one situation where we were racing and there is a second channel where the crew chief and the spotter communicate without the driver. And the crew chief would go over to that channel and talk to TJ and go ‘What the hell is he doing over there.’ And TJ always had my back. He would come to tell me like, “Man you don’t want to hear what is going on channel two. But it was a rough day.”

To this TJ Majors added, “There was one time I remember when this crew chief was saying we had stayed out on tires and we got our doors blown off because we were on 10-lap tires at a high fall off track and the crew chief came on the other radio and said ‘why don’t you just tell everybody to go by. I am like dude we are out here struggling, why don’t you keep up and tell him yourself?’ And I didn’t get a response back from that.”

Not knowing the name of the crew chief surely bugged the mind of the host. So, as any inquisitive individual could have done, Andrew Curling, in a curious tone, asked the name of the crew chief, but both Junior and Majors simply declined to answer.

But the role of a journalist unearthing, deep hidden secrets, and it seems we at EssentiallySports may have found this mystery crew chief. It may be none other than Lance McGrew, with whom the former Cup Series driver paired up for a fleeting while back in 2009. Even the team boss of Hendrick Motorsports had given a thumbs-up for the duo pairing up for races.

But things got testy as time flew by, and this is evident from the conversation between the driver and the crew chief, where McGrew pushes Junior beyond his limits. And to which the driver responds, “I am doing it so much that I can’t look at the scoreboard.”
