“Each Time, It Gets Tougher” – Dale Earnhardt Jr Hints at Stopping His Fan-Favorite NASCAR Tradition

It was a bittersweet moment when Dale Earnhardt Jr. was forced to retire from racing at the age he did because of his concussion problems. However, he has remained involved with the sport as much as he could, along with taking part in one Xfinity Series race every year.

But looking ahead, his run of yearly starts in the second division of NASCAR could be coming to an end.

In a recent Ask Jr. segment of his podcast show, Earnhardt Jr. spoke candidly about how one has to be 100% committed to do well, get better, and succeed at whatever they do, particularly in racing.

He mentioned the one thing former NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne told him – “If you want to be good at it, you gotta do it every week.”

“I feel that, since that, even with the Xfinity cars. Every year that I race and I do just one race, every time I go to do that just one race, I’m falling, I fell further and further behind,” Dale Jr. described.

“And it’s harder to go out there and be competitive. Each time, it gets tougher,” he continued. “So you can’t be good at anything unless you’re a 100% involved and invested in it.”

“Can’t do anything part-time and be great.”

How did Dale Earnhardt Jr react after this year’s Martinsville Xfinity race?

This year, Dale Earnhardt Jr. chose the short track of Martinsville to be the track where he would make his yearly appearance. And boy, did he have a good race, considering the context.

The JR Motorsports driver and owner finished in an impressive 11th place.

Speaking after the race, Earnhardt Jr described how he wants to get back and try again to get a better result. “I think I could perform better,” he said. The NASCAR Hall of Famer then opened up that a lot of the missing pieces in his performance and run were down to him.

“A lot of it was me,” he continued. “I felt like I was getting better. But I want to go do it again.”

“I need to do it more to be better.”
