Reflecting on that pivotal moment during an interview with Graham Bensinger, Patrick expressed why she called it the biggest regret of her life. “Well, because they’re hard to come by, period.” She explained that looking back, she would have preferred to take the risk of running out of fuel while leading the race rather than playing it safe to ensure she finished. She believed that it would have been “much cooler” to run out of fuel in the lead and rely on a timely yellow flag to potentially secure the win.

Reflecting on the decision, Danica added, “Of course, this is not what I knew then, which is why I didn’t include it in the decision. But we didn’t have the right systems in place to know exactly how much fuel was left. So I ended with enough for two and a half more laps. So another… That was just like the real information on how I could have, you know, made it but…”
