Very few drivers have accomplished what Gil de Ferran has achieved in his racing career. Whether it was notching Indy 500 victories to recording the fastest speed record in a closed course, where he closed a lap at 241.428 MPH, the driver had accomplished all. The heart-wrenching incident occurred, while he was racing at Concourse Club, a private race track located in Opa Locka, and suffered a fatal cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

After the motorsports community was apprised of the passing away of de Ferran, the world came crashing down for the drivers, especially Kenny Wallace. The veteran NASCAR driver was left to contemplate how transient life is and how one can try to try to stay safe. He took to Twitter and expressed his heartfelt emotions. He stated, “Reading about, Gil de Ferran passing away at only 56 years old. This is so heartbreaking the way it happened.”

“Pulled over while on the race track and said he did not feel good and never recovered. SIGH. My heart breaks for his family. Prayers to everyone involved. I try so hard to defend against something like this happening to me. Blood tests and complete physical every year. All we can do is try.”

According to his son, Luke, who was present in the scene, divulged that de Ferran had pulled over his car at the entrance of the pit stop, after not feeling well. However, the safety cars took time to approach de Ferran’s, due to the absence of any on-track crashes. On the track was also present the driver’s long-time friend Ozz Negri.
