“He’s Honestly Taught Me a Little Bit Too”: Kyle Busch Admits His Driver-Coach Relationship With Son Brexton Has Been Mutually Rewarding

Kyle Busch is one of those racecar drivers who have performed at a very high level for the better part of their career. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has consistently delivered good results year-in-year-out for a long time.

This would make one think that Busch has mastered his craft, that there’s not much for him to learn. However, he recently described how he is still learning in a new role of not just his career, but his life.

In an interview with Speedway Digest, Kyle Busch admitted that teaching his six-year-old son, Brexton Busch, in his rapidly growing career, has, in turn, helped him in learning new things in his own.

Busch said, “He’s honestly taught me a little bit too. As I’m his driver coach, I’m helping him through things and I’m thinking – I’m on the sidelines and I’m like okay, what do I need to tell him? How can I explain this to a six-year-old so when he comes off the racetrack to go over things and watch film, I can talk to him about it?”

“Now I’m using that too myself as I’m driving around the racetrack. I’m like okay, DA. Do this, look at this differently. Don’t screw this up. Hey, you need to throw it into the top a little higher. You missed that corner, that was dumb. Just certain things in that nature,” he continued.

“I’m talking to myself, driver coaching myself a lot more now.”

“He’s very young for his age” – Kyle Busch on Brexton Busch

Kyle Busch described that Brexton, who will turn seven in May, is “very young for his age.” This is simply because the young racer is already in quarter midgets, junior sprints, and outlaw karts across the country.

“We’ve got three races out in California when we are out there. In Phoenix, we’ve got three races when were there. I’ve built out his schedule with like 80 shows this year,” Busch said.

However, Busch admits that despite the 80 fixtures on the calendar, they’re “not going to hit them all.” “I guarantee you that he runs 50-60 races this year at least,” he said.

The way things are going for little Brexton, and the way he is not only taking on the challenges head-on but performing well, it’s all but sure that he grows up to be a solid racecar driver.

Whether he’ll be as good as his father, time will tell.
