Previously, even FIA branched out to Formula E in the open-wheel racing segment. It only makes sense for NASCAR to consider the prospect of electrification in a series considering the messaging behind sustainability. But at the moment it remains speculation until NASCAR officially confirms the same.

NASCAR electric car series what we know

NASCAR never hid its intention to shy away from running electric cars in the future. Though we might be seeing this become a reality much faster than anticipated. Earlier, the Kickin’ the Tires website leaked a few documents regarding the upcoming support series.

According to the documents, NASCAR will run a demonstration during the Clash at the L.A. Coliseum pre-season event in the February of next year. Further extending it with six races alongside the Cup Series race weekends. The vehicles used for the series will be a fully electric modification of the current Next-Gen Cup cars. Featuring all-wheel-drive powertrains and will have around 1,000 horsepower at disposal. In comparison, the current Cup cars yield 670 horsepower with V8 engines.

In a statement to Fox News, NASCAR mentioned, “As we have mentioned in the past, we are exploring the potential for an EV demonstration series. We are currently working with our OEM [original equipment manufacturer] partners and race teams as the program progresses.”

Meanwhile, the manufacturers for the new series are planning for sport utility vehicle style bodies to set the series apart. If this pans out to be the reality then we’d have a bunch of electric SUVs zooming around famed NASCAR tracks, at the same or maybe even faster than cup series cars.
