After New Hampshire, only six more races left, before only a few blessed drivers make their way for the post-season. With every passing weekend, the doleful tunes of Kevin Harvick’s retirement seem to make its presence felt. The dark horse is set to draw the curtains on his racing life as he is ready to hang up his racing suit. However, is it just Harvick who will be missed on the tracks of NASCAR from the next season, or will this season also see another veteran driver and Cup Series champion bow out?

It is none other than Martin Truex Jr who is caught in the dilemma of retirement even after seizing his third victory of the season. Nevertheless, his team boss, Joe Gibbs seems to have the perfect answer to settle all the questions of retirement.

Joe Gibbs spills the beans on his driver’s retirement plans after a long-awaited victory

The victory on the tracks of Monster Mile was an emphatic one for Martin Truex Jr as he and his No.19 Toyota went on to clinch a third victory of the season. The victory at the tracks of New Hampshire was something that Truex Jr was yearning for him, a victory that he was waiting for throughout his career as a racer. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was finally able to achieve it in the rain-delayed race. His first victory on the track came after about 30 Cup Series starts. 

Amidst all the victory lane celebrations, the question that is there at the back of every NASCAR enthusiast’s mind is: will this be the ultimate season for the No.19 driver? Retirement has been on the cards for quite some time for Truex Jr, and by winning his most desired race, will the driver finally let the cat out of the bag?

Even the journalists were curious about the fact and asked the team boss Joe Gibbs, post-race, whether Truex will be coming back for another season.

To this, Mr. Gibbs retorted, “I wish would you please stop talking to him for me. He tells me the same thing every year that- ‘I’m right in the middle of trying to make this decision. I go, ‘Come on what are you talking about, man? You are making money, have fun driving race cars. Come on’!”

“But we haven’t I think it is though very important for us to kind of have some pressure here, because it’s pressure for all of us. It’s a huge deal for us and I am hoping, I really felt like he’s having such a great year and I think he’s having fun and so I am hoping that we get a good answer for us here,” Gibbs added.

While Trux Jr’s team boss is hopeful of his driver, who would be able to continue his career and carry forward his own legacy for another season, Truex Jr, on the other hand, seemed to elude the question of his future plans. 

After his third victory of the season, the driver expressed to the media, “This one’s been eluding me for a long, long time.”

However, when asked about his retirement, Truex Jr added, “It takes a lot. It’s not just show up at the track, drive the car, go home. Takes a lot of commitment. It’s a lot of travel, a lot of missing things with family and friends, and all of those things I’ve done for 25 years. Do I want to keep doing it and am I willing to sacrifice all of those things again for my team?”

He also added, “Probably more so their timeline than mine,” while speaking on the team’s stance on his retirement.

The question of retirement will surely loom over the 43-year-old driver, as the post-season steps closer. Nevertheless, the JGR driver would love to feast on the Loudon the lobster, and make his way for the next week’s race at Pocono.
