After a week of nail-biting performances in the quarter-mile dirt track, for the Tulsa Shootout, the racing world has geared up for one of the greatest annual sprint racing, the Chili Bowl Nationals. Drivers from all across the country have flocked under the roof of the SageNet center, to try their luck and achieve the coveted Golden Driller award. While the roster flaunts the names of veteran dirt racers and former champions, there is also the inclusion of novices. Their inexperienced nature was evident from their recent media interviews.

The authorities of the event had mandated rear tires for the event and had laid down the various requirements that the drivers have to adhere to. However, when some drivers were asked about their stance on the newly introduced rule, their tender footedness in the event was evident during the press conference.

Amateur Drivers fail to enthrall in the Chili Bowl Nationals

Earlier in the 2023 season, a spec updation of the Midget Chasiss was announced for the Chili Bowl Nationals, starting from the 2025 season. However, for the 2024 season, authorities had enforced a Rear Tires specifications.

The rules for the right rear must be Hosier SP3 and 82/12-13 SP2. While a veteran driver would be able to differentiate the changes in tire specs, for many, the changes have been confusing. When  journalist Matt Weaver posted a video where drivers could be seen talking about the new mandate, what’s clear was that the changes are not something every driver was acquainted with. “I don’t race on Hosiers at all back home. To be honest with you, it’s a totally new deal to me. Obviously, we have been running on 84-inch tires in previous years we have gone to 82 inches, super hard time,” said one of the drivers at the press conference.

He further added, “So there is a bit of uncertainty on what brim to run with what tire, and maybe it won’t lay rubber as quickly as what it has done previously. I don’t know. But I think everyone has the same tire, so the racing is going to be just as good.”

Another racer also share his take and said, “I am honestly in the same boat as he i. I mean I run on Hosiers, but I don’t run enough mid-races myself to tell the differences between them.”

The third driver surpassed the emotions of all the other two drivers and expressed, “You got three guys that don’t really run midget a lot but I would say regardless of the tires, it’s like the same guys running upfront. As far as me I am not smart enough or talented enough to know the difference. I couldn’t tell the differences on what tires are on there.”

While tire specs have been a topic of conversation across the board, there is also one other aspect that caught people’s attention. And that is Chase Briscoe’ Golden driller run. Coming into his ninth year of participation, Briscoe will be looking to double down on his efforts.

Chase Briscoe stumbles on the opening night of Chili Bowl

Although the driver failed to lock himself in Saturday’s championship, he displayed a sense of grit in the main race on the opening night of the week-long series. Starting 12th, the driver moved up the board to finish fourth. After jockeying for the lead within the top-5, the highest position that Briscoe could rise was second, before falling back and settling for the fourth position.

Speaking to FloRacing, Briscoe expressed,Kind of sickening there. I felt like if that caution would have come out with four to go, I felt like I was for sure going to get by Shane(Golobic) for second and maybe could have caught Tanner(Carrick) off guard running the bottom. I needed to run four perfect laps on the bottom, and I messed every single one of them up I could. Didn’t do a very good job there at the end.”
