In a recent conversation ahead of the Verizon 200 at Indianapolis, Bowman reflected on his seemingly dismal season so far. The 2023 campaign kicked off with high aspirations, but unforeseen obstacles sent Bowman’s journey spiraling off course. In addition to a fateful sprint car crash in April that resulted in broken vertebrae, the shadow of a 60-point penalty loomed over Hendrick Motorsports due to modifications on their cars at Richmond Raceway.

Bowman’s voice carries a mix of determination and frustration as he reflected on his season, saying, “For me, I just want to get back to running how I should… we’ve had moments, but we never put a whole race together.” His ambition to return to his earlier form is evident, highlighting the need to regain consistency and regain control over their performance. Despite the challenges, Bowman remains resolute, striving to bring all four Hendrick cars to the playoffs.

When asked what went South this season, Bowman said, “I mean, Charlotte, we were pretty fast and our pit stall killed us. Chicago, we got crashed. Pocono, we got crashed. Michigan, got caught up in the deal on the restart… You know it’s been frustrating.

“Those were all races that we were fully capable of running top five… What four top-5s in our points right now, and we’re probably on the good side of things so… Just you know it’s been frustrating. But that’s the sport sometimes. It’ll kick your a**. It’s no different than life. So just trying to do the best we can.”

Behind every racer’s helmet lies a story of strength and vulnerability. Bowman’s story took an unexpected turn when a crash left him with broken vertebrae. He recalled the moment when he spoke to Dale Earnhardt Jr on his podcast back in June,

“I’m great at denying red flags. Like the red flag of the bone snapping noise when I landed, it sounded like I was at the chiropractor.”

This refusal to acknowledge the severity of his situation is a trait many athletes share, often masking pain in the pursuit of their passion. The season’s trajectory took an abrupt turn after his return, a shift from consistent performance to bouts of misfortune. His analysis is a reminder of the ebbs and flows that define the world of racing, an arena where fortunes change in the blink of an eye.

“For me, it’s been interesting because I feel like we couldn’t really do much wrong before I got hurt. You know, we were running really well every week. We were really good at points, really good at average finish and since then [the injury] anytime we’re running well, something happens and when we’re bad, you can put us out of our miseries.”

“So it’s really just been a complete 180 of where we were at I feel like. But that hasn’t necessarily… I don’t think that’s come from, you know, somebody doing something or change. I feel like the sport has a lot of ebbs and flows and um you know we were up when I left and I came back we’re a little bit down, but you know… had good speed lately so I think we’re on the good side of things.” he added.

Bowman’s journey this season is a reminder that success is not just about crossing the finish line first. But it’s about navigating every twist and turn with a strong resolve.
