Jimmie Johnson and Chandra Janway’s love story has a touch of racing magic, and it’s thanks to NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, who introduced them in 2002. A year later, on a scenic vacation in Beaver Creek, Colorado, Johnson popped the question and Janway said yes. By December 11, 2004, the couple had tied the knot in the idyllic setting of St. Barth in the Caribbean Islands, and their honeymoon was pure luxury, a celebration aboard Rick Hendrick’s yacht. Fast forward 21 years, and they are born stronger than ever, with Johnson recently looking back fondly on how that unforgettable proposal all came together.

Speaking to Marty Smith on the Never Settle podcast, the 50-year-old didn’t shy away from taking his other half’s name when Smith asked what feat paid off in the best possible way. The seven-time NASCAR champ with a grin said, “Well, we still have some runway left there, so we’ll see. What has paid off in the best way? Chandra Janway is entering my life. I bought a ring six months into dating. I do recall. I go to (Casey) Mears. Fully excited and happy.”

And after all, it may not be such a bad idea to disclose one of your impulsive decisions to one of your closest friends. Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears’ long-standing friendship and racing history date back to their teenage years, when they were both involved in off-road racing. Both drivers were part of Hendrick Motorsports during the mid-2000s, with Casey joining the team in 2007. And let’s just say Casey was all for Johnson to hold his horses on the proposal.

Johnson recalls the conversation with his ex-teammate, saying, “He (Casey Mears) was the first guy I saw after I came back with a ring in my pocket from New York. Mears, Mears. I bought a ring. He’s like, ‘For who?’ I’m like, ‘Who else?’ Like, ‘Oh, one of those rings?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, dude. Bought a ring.’ He’s like, ‘You’re going to propose to her? You’ve been dating her for six months.’ I’m like, ‘I’ve always heard when you know, you know.'”

At that time, Johnson was transitioning into his full-time NASCAR Cup Series career with Hendrick Motorsports, aiming to be one of the best the sport has seen, while Chandra was a model living in New York City. After their marriage, Chandra relocated to North Carolina to be with Johnson and has been spotted multiple times on the racetrack, supporting her husband from the sidelines as he rewrites history. But the story isn’t over yet; Johnson owes Mears big time.

He added, “He’s like, ‘Can I see it?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, man, it’s in my pocket. Hold on.’ Pull this thing out. I show it to him. He grabs it, puts it in his pocket, and he goes, ‘I’m not going to give it back to you for six months. I’m going to lock it in my safe. You cannot be walking around with this in your pocket. You at least need to date her for a year.’ And I was like, ‘Alright, makes sense.'”

As laughter echoed in the interview with Johnson, it underscored the married couple’s love and commitment to each other. And the duo started a legacy together. In 2006, they co-founded the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, aiming to assist children, families, and communities in need throughout the United States. Since its inception, the foundation has committed over $13 million to various K-12 public schools and charities across the country. Looking back, they were definitely meant for each other.

All thanks to Mears’s force of patience, Johnson continues to share his story. The lovebirds have been blessed with two daughters as well, Genevieve Marie, born in 2010, and Lydia, born in 2013. They maintain residences in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a chic apartment in New York City’s West Village, reflecting their balance between family life and Johnson’s racing career. And the rest is history. And as for Mears’ closest friend, Johnson makes a blunt admission on life as a team owner, but a more personal shift in the veteran’s mind seems to have come to life.

Speaking to The Athletic, Johnson reminisced about the moments of this new shift. He said, “Evie is 15 now. We just dropped her off at boarding school this month, and gosh, what an emotional roller coaster it’s been. She advocated for this move, but that doesn’t make it any easier for her or for us when saying goodbye and leaving. We thought we had until 18, so 15 feels ahead of schedule.”

Watching his daughter transition, Johnson reflected on how quickly time passes, particularly for someone whose life has long been defined by a singular passion. The moment felt both surreal and pregnant, bringing a heightened awareness of the passage of time and the value of family. These transitions have offered them a renewed perspective, reminding them to balance professional commitments with the fleeting, precious moments spent with their loved ones.
