Can you imagine watching NASCAR on TV without the colorful graphics and stats that pop up every session? No, right? The person who played a key role in enhancing the product for the viewers at home was Andrew Lorenz. A motorsport lover from a young age, NASCAR became his destiny. His time at the Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway was memorable. While he couldn’t cement his name among the Cup Series greats, his prowess was working behind the scenes.

Lorenz, the SMT employee, passed away at age 44. During lap 65 of the Ambetter Health 400 race, FOX Sports’ commentators mourned his loss. “Today Fox Sports and our entire industry mourn the loss of a friend and colleague, Andrew Lorenz, who passed away on Tuesday after a lengthy illness. An integral part of our team, Andrew worked at SMT, the company behind our driver graphic pointers,” the commentator announced. Further, his mother, Patricia Lorenz, took to Facebook as she documented what would be the final days for his son. 

How Andrew Lorenz helped FOX bring the best out of NASCAR on TV

The cause of death is yet to be confirmed by an official source. He passed away on February 20, 2024, at 2:24 pm after 12 days at home with hospice care. 

Lorenz was an integral part of how FOX telecasted NASCAR races for its millions of viewers during the Cup Series race in Atlanta. He was a part of the company SMT, which helped the sports TV network come up with and present the driver’s graphic pointers. These contributions were not limited to NASCAR. They percolated into other sports, like baseball, football, and golf. He might not have been in the spotlight himself, but made sure that the athletes got the best spotlight possible.

According to reports, Andrew Lorenz worked with several other sports and with big media houses before joining SMT. One report said that he worked for ESPN and Sportvision. With a CV like that, it is no surprise that he was one of the most well-respected and influential people in sports media today.

One of the most heartbreaking parts of his passing was his mother describing her last few days with her son on social media. The post where she announced Andrew’s passing is bound to strike an emotional chord with the fans of a man who worked hard to bring them the best product on TV.

Taking to Facebook, Patricia Lorenz revealed that she had been with her son for his last few days and that a lot of his friends and co-workers at SMT had dropped in to pay their friend a visit, which meant a lot to Andrew Lorenz. It seems like despite his illness, the sports media superstar was happy as he bid farewell to his loved ones. His mother wrote about him on social media quite frequently as time eventually ran out, but Andrew will live on in her and his loved one’s hearts.

“After 10 days in the hospital and 12 days at home with Hospice care, my 44-year-old son Andrew died at 2:24pm on Tuesday, February 20th.  I was blessed to sit by his side that whole day holding his hand, praying and telling him over and over how much he is loved and that I would not leave him. He leaves behind two sons, 19-year-old Ethan and 9-year-old Henry and his life partner Carrissa, the boys mother. Over the past 24 days that I have been here with Andrew I learned how beloved he is to his many co-workers at SMT, Sports Media Technology.””

“So many of them as well as Andrew’s friends and family members came to visit him these past few weeks, which meant the world to Andrew and to all of us. His funeral celebration of life will happen here in Campbell California on Tuesday, March 5.  Please continue to keep Andrew and all of us in your prayers,” the post read.

Andrew Lorenz’s passing feels personal for many fans. Above everything else, he was a son, a husband, and a father. We extend our condolences to everyone who has been affected by his passing.
