Last year, the excitement among NASCAR fans blew through the roof thanks to Netflix. Remember how Drive to Survive shot Formula One to become a global sporting phenomenon? Well, NASCAR is getting their version of Drive to Survive and Netflix just recently shared its teaser on X. The Series will be called NASCAR: Full Speed and it will be based on the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. It’s scheduled to be released on January 30.

Drive to Survive did wonders for Formula One and NASCAR hopes that Full Speed will be able to do the same for them. The marked increase in F1 fans was what inspired NASCAR in this project and it is popular belief that the stock car racing competition’s fans are on the decline. If successful, NASCAR could become a global phenomenon.

In a recent post on their X handle, Netflix posted the trailer and the video, “The race to the finish is just the beginning. NASCAR: Full Speed, a Netflix Sports Series, pulls up January 30.” The trailer featured several Cup Series drivers like Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson and moments from the season like Ryan Preece’s horror crash at Daytona. People involved with the show have hailed the docuseries and promoted it a great deal.

The series will have 5 episodes of 45 minutes each. Filming began in September 2023 when the playoffs began in Darlington. “The series will feature exclusive access to drivers and teams, bringing fans behind the scenes at and away from the track while exploring the physical and mental challenges of competing for a championship at the world’s highest level of stock car racing,” an earlier release by Netflix read.

“NASCAR has kicked down the door to an entirely new era recently — with new tracks, cars, team owners, and stars combining to deliver some of the best competition the sport has ever seen,” Tim Clark, Senior Vice President, and Chief Digital Officer for NASCAR had said earlier to PEOPLE.com, hyping up the product.

One of the executive producers of the show is 2-time Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. Junior sat down for an interview with People magazine earlier where he spoke about how the intense nature of the playoff format will easily dramatize the show and hopefully draw a lot of people into the world of stock car racing.

The playoff format in NASCAR is a matter of contention. A lot of debate has unfolded in the recent past. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr sounded like he supported it. According to the former Cup Series driver, the intensity of the playoffs in the NASCAR Cup Series makes it unique compared to all other kinds of motorsports.

“The intensity of the elimination format in the NASCAR playoffs is unlike anything else in motorsports,” the NASCAR Hall of Famer said. “NASCAR: Full Speed provides an incredible opportunity for folks to learn more about how this sport works, who these drivers are as people and competitors, and what makes them the best in the world at what they do,” he added as per a PEOPLE.com exclusive report.

The project is an ambitious one but the reward is very high. If one looks at F1 as an example, NASCAR could reach heights even greater than it did in the 1900s. Do you think NASCAR: Full Speed will be a success, or is it going to turn out to be a disaster?

One take at a time

Drivers these days need to be more like Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace. Well, now you know who my favorites are. For me, it all began with my interest in F1, but I was just tired of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen showing unparalleled dominance.
