Certain sporting rivalries have been greatly celebrated and have gone down the pages of history. And it seems that it is not just the common masses who are invested in these rivalries and busy choosing sides. Hendrick Motorsports golden boy Chase Elliott seems to have been drawn to one such battle which has also inspired him to search for the light at the end of the tunnel after his dismal performance in the 2023 Cup Series season.

Who is the better of the two Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes or the Buffalo Bills counterpart Josh Allen? Many would put their hands down on Patrick Mahomes simply after his impeccable resume, marked with his three Super Bowl rings. Although Mahomes’ counterpart at the Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen is yet to earn a Super Bowl ring, there is no denying the fact Allen has been a worthy opponent and holds the prowess to tip Mahomes from his throne. While many might find this not convincing enough, the 2020 Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, on the contrary, finds this plausible.

The #9 Hendrick Motorsports driver who had faced the worst setback in the 2023 season after failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in his Cup Series, considers Allen as one of the players that resonates with his current standing. When asked about this by the media, Elliott stated, “I think it does resonate sometimes. I think one fortunate piece of my career is we have gone through periods of time and we have had a lot of success and we have also gone through periods of time where we haven’t.”

“So I think kind of as we have gone down this path of having a tough year last year, you kind of look at things differently, and while to your point asking about Mahomes. I mean obviously, he is a great athlete he has been at the top of his game for some time. It kind of makes me think about Josh Allen, a guy who just can’t get over that hum but we all know he is really good, how does he handle having to play Mahomes in the AFC Championship or NFC or whatever every year.”

“At some point he is going to beat him and I think that journey is pretty cool to watch a guy who is obviously very talented and can do a really good job and works hard at his craft and seems like a good dude. But he is just been that little tick off and I think there is a lot to be learned and gain from that journey probably more than just watching people dominate,” Chase Elliott concluded.

While the former Cup Series is yet to overcome his dejection from last year, Elliott is gradually finding back his pace in the 2024 season, which is evident from his run during the practice session at Phoenix. Elliott marked a lap of 27.534 seconds, surpassing his teammates.

He expressed, We certainly have room to improve, but I thought we made it better. I like some of the characteristics that we were able to adjust on, which is always encouraging anytime you start practice and you start changing things.”
