Bowman Gray Stadium
Bowman Gray Stadium is all set to host the NASCAR Cup Series Clash on February 1–2, 2025. The University has made some official announcements to prepare for the series’ return to the quarter-mile oval for the first time since 1971. However, NASCAR has been a breeding ground for accidents, often stemming from below-par safety measures.
The organizers have installed some safety measures to ensure the races at Bowman Gray are safer and do not pose much hindrance to either the racer or the cars themselves. However, it appears that the NASCAR fans are far from pleased and have reservations about the recently implemented safety measures.

Bowman Gray Stadium gets hold of new SAFER barriers
One of the most poignant features of the NASCAR National Series racetracks was the addition of SAFER barriers. This barrier is a sophisticated measure, precisely a steel and foam energy reduction system. They installed fresh catch fences around the perimeter to ensure the cars do not have much damage on the car body itself. Meanwhile, to add to the efficiency of the newly installed safety system, the organizers removed the previous guard rails.
The Bowman Gray Stadium is also often referred to as the “madhouse” and is known for hosting events like the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series. Even the modified exhibition races are held here given that the Stadium last saw a Cup Series race in 1971. This was when the NASCAR Hall of Famer and former Cup Series Champion Bobby Allison made it to the victory lane.
Not only the SAFER measures, but the good thing about the stadium is that there have been additions to the lighting system as well. The stadium will now have a Musco Lighting system and this one has been designed specifically to improve the track lighting and the visibility. This aims to reduce energy consumption and provide the right type of illumination for the event.
Ben Kennedy, NASCAR Executive Vice President, opened up about the preparations at the Bowman Gray Stadium. He said, “Part of being good stewards of Bowman Gray Stadium includes preparing it to host compelling events that rightfully place it in the national spotlight.”

Given how this stadium has undergone no revamps over decades and now there are changes just because the NASCAR Cup Series is returning, a fan has commented on the hypocrisy. Highlighting the disparity, a fan commented, “Wait, what….not safe enough for the stars but ok for local racers….gimme a break”.
The SAFER barriers are conducive to cars often attempting the iconic Hail Melon move. This is a move when the car gets over the SAFER barriers and climbs up the wall. Remember how Christopher Bell climbed up the SAFER barrier at the Martinsville Speedway and ended with his penalization? Citing the same, a fan commented, “Hail Melon timeeee”.
Commenting on how the track is narrow and the safety measures might not be up to the mark, a fan commented, “Good lord that’s small”. Mentioning how these tons of safety measures could bring down the fun and adventurous element of the show, a fan commented, “Going to be a sh-tshow”.
