Richard Childress’ Forgotten Driver and Former Sprint Cup Team Owner Turns 55 Years Old

There are a few drivers in the contemporary generation who have been tagged as the villains of NASCAR. However, a fan who has been following the sport for a long time is surely acquainted that it is Robby Gordon who flaunts the crown of being the real bad boy of the sport. 

It’s not every day, that one finds a driver whose major chunk of reputation comes from on-track antics. However, Robby Gordon was one such driver who easily fitted into this infamous reputation. Nevertheless, it’s been a long time since the driver donned his firesuit and navigated his way on the track. As time and tide have never waited for none, the same can be asserted for Gordon, as he reached another milestone in life.

If one looks back to one of the most memorable scenes from the 2023 Cup Series, it would include a furious Austin Dillon shooting his helmet at his former teammate Tyler Reddick. Although the RCR driver was not penalized by the authorities, this was not the first instance that a driver had hurled his helmet with the race being underway. You would be right in guessing Robby Gordon as another driver to do so.

If one remembers 2005’s Sylvania 300 race, the vivid image is of an enraged Gordon hurling his helmet at Michael Waltrip, that narrowly missed Tony Stewart’s #20 car. Nevertheless, amidst this never-ending saga of Gordon’s on-track shenanigans, the former Richard Childress Racing driver, completed another year around the sun to turn 55 on the 2nd of January. A Totally Motorsport post on Twitter read, “HAPPY Birthday, Robby Gordon. The popular American motorsport racer, who has three NASCAR Cup Series race wins to his name, turns 55 today.”

In his 19-year Cup Series career that spanned 396 starts, the driver and team owner was able to earn three victories to his name. Moreover, his inclination to stir up a myriad of controversies often found the driver at loggerheads with the authorities, due to his maneuverings in his cars. Owing to this, the driver in just five years raked up fines, whose outstanding amount stood at a whopping, $290,000. Amongst the drivers, Gordon locked horns with the likes of Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and also his own teammate Kevin Harvick.

It was in 2013, that Robby Gordon’s career came to a halt after he failed to procure any sponsorships for his team. Since then, the driver is yet to be seen on the tracks of NASCAR, but the driver is far from announcing his retirement. 

Furthermore, a recent picture of the driver and his close ally surfaced on Twitter, which seems to raise speculations about whether the driver is ready for another comeback. The Tweet read, So you want a fun fact that make his fans smile and so on…. Robby isn’t done with Nascar or Indycar as well lol recent talk with him. Few weeks ago. Tho if he returned it would be for Indy 500 and for road courses in NASCAR top series.”

“Robby at 54 years old still feels like he can win in NASCAR and so on. He feels like his brands will bring him and his son the funds to run competitively and so on. So might see Robby returning to the big races on tv soon and. then see Max there. I do know Robby has been researching what it cost to build (buy and slap together) a current cup car and Indy car again….sooo full circle might come.”

With that being said, it will be interesting to see whether the former IndyCar driver Robby Gordon is ready to give his second shot at racing and rev up his engine on the asphalt tracks of NASCAR.
