The sparks of urgency flew on Sunday. As the second race of the NASCAR Cup Series Round of 8 commenced, there was tension among the drivers. With only three spots left to lay claim on, seven drivers had their aim locked in. However, it was a day for a new winner in the playoffs as Christopher Bell held on to his lead to finally win a race, fending off Ryan Blaney, who finished a close second.

The result will put Martinsville in the spotlight. Only two spots remain up for grabs, and six drivers are in contention. With JGR veterans Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. keeping themselves out of the race with a wreck and an engine blowup, respectively, the stage was set for Blaney and Bell to shine. Hamlin could have eclipsed Blaney’s afternoon and collected the #12 in a wreck, but with the heavens to thank for the No. 12 Ford now sits in front of the cutoff line.

Ryan Blaney holds his position amid Denny Hamlin scares

The season has been one of mixed fortunes for Ryan Blaney. Following an early win in the regular season at Charlotte, he lost all momentum through various factors and had little to show for coming into the playoffs. The revival of his season began in the round of 12, with his second win at Talladega.

As the 29-year-old cruised into the lead, his fellow drivers would not just sit back and let him. That was when Denny Hamlin decided to resort to a rather violent approach as a tug of war began with 38 laps to go. Ryan Blaney didn’t back down from taking up the matter after the race, either.

In a post-race interview, the driver of the No. 12 hit back at Hamlin, saying, “Well, he tried to slide me two or three times and failed miserably and then just decided to chase me up. I mean, if you’re going to slide somebody, slide somebody, commit it. Don’t halfway do it and use me up. So what did he say, ‘Hack? I think he was that today, so yeah.”

The Team Penske driver had come fresh out of an on-track tussle with the already-qualified Kyle Larson. The duo met on pit road during the green flag stops, and things could have been worse for Ryan Blaney had Larson hit his rear bumper. Although Larson avoided hurting the #12 Ford, the #5 Camaro lost control in this process and hit the sand barrels on the outside pit wall. An unfortunate Larson broke his car’s tie rod and ended up in P34 despite being the leader for 96 laps.

Blaney reflects on a rewarding day out.

Before this race, Homestead had been a venue of horror and underperformance for Ryan Blaney. In eight starts previously, the Team Penske ace had a top-5 and a top-20 finish to his name without a win. The Round of 8 has also been a limiting stage for him. Having been at this point of the season for the last three seasons, he beat off the Homestead Blues this time.

Revealing what went on in his mind as crashes transpired behind him on the track and pit road, he said, “I knew obviously the No. 11 had a problem right in front of me, and they told me about the No. 19. I was trying to figure out how to win the damn race. I mean, that was the biggest thing.”

Tried to figure out a way to win the damn thing and just came up short,” added Blaney. He now sits in fourth and ten points ahead of 23XI Racing driver Tyler Reddick, reversing the situation completely. Ryan Blaney was 17 points below the cutoff when he arrived at the track. With Larson and Bell in the championship race already, stacking up points will be huge for every driver.
