Denny Hamlin took everyone by surprise when he replied to Josh Williams and offered to pay his fine. Williams found himself in the headlines after he left his car at the start/finish line in the Xfinity race in Atlanta after NASCAR asked him to park it.

Speaking about this incident in a recent episode of his podcast show, Hamlin described the circumstances which led to this moment.

The veteran claimed how the beginning of the Xfinity race was “nothing but a s**tshow”, filled with a lot of cautions. This probably got NASCAR really frustrated, as Hamlin claimed they had run out of their TV window by the time Stage 2 ended.

Hamlin suggested Josh Williams probably found himself on the wrong side of this frustration as after coming to get his racecar repaired post a multi-car wreck, Williams caused another caution which led to the tower losing “its s**t,” and asking the driver to park his car.

Denny Hamlin on why he offered to pay Josh Williams’ fine

Of course, everyone knows what happened when Josh Williams was asked to park his car, as Hamlin aptly described it, by saying he took “exception to that.” But that decision from Williams, to leave his car at the start/finish line, had everyone forecasting a big fine coming the driver’s way from NASCAR.

Along those lines, Hamlin claimed he saw a video on social media in which, as Williams was going to the pit wall, a medical official can be seen telling him to go to the infield care center as standard procedure in a wreck.

“And he says something about, again I’m paraphrasing,” Hamlin described, “but it looked like he was just like, I’m not going or whatever like that, and he’s like, ‘What are they gonna do? Fine me? I can’t pay it, I can’t afford to pay it.'”

“So at that point, that’s where you saw me respond saying, ‘I’ll pay your fine bud.'”

“I have some sympathy for someone like Josh who is trying to make it in the sport,” Hamlin said. “I’m hearing more and more about his story of how good a racecar driver he actually is in the lower ranks. And it’s like this guy’s really got a story and I want to help out.”

Having said that, Hamlin knew this admission would end up in him getting a flood of requests for help on social media, but he accepts that one can’t help everyone. Still, he wants to do his bit where he can.
