Spotters are the heroes of every NASCAR team who we don’t get to see. The spotter’s role is one of the most important in any team, guiding the driver and handling essentially all communications.

Whether that be Eddie D’Hondt for Chase Elliott or Freddie Kraft with Bubba Wallace, spotters are almost like co-drivers, helping them navigate through the track, helping them find the fastest spots.

However, the spotters arguably don’t get as much appreciation from the NASCAR officials as the drivers do. Luckily, we have one hero among the officials who stood out. And that hero is none other than the NASCAR president, Steve Phelps, as Brett Griffin revealed in a recent episode of Door, Bumper, Clear!

He said, “I’ve been in the sport for a long time. The only time I ever saw the president on the roof was when he was coming up there to wreck my a**, until Steve Phelps got there.”

“Third time this year that Steve Phelps has come around to the spotters before the race, the president of NASCAR, Steve Phelps, thanked us.”

“Like, touched all of us on our back and shook our hand.”

Griffin revealed the dark side of NASCAR, “We got in elevators with these guys sometimes, and they don’t even speak to us, the higher-ups of NASCAR,”

It’s unfortunate how most NASCAR officials don’t talk to the spotters, especially considering the role they play. Fortunately, we have someone like Steve Phelps to help improve the sport in that way. And the president is committed to propelling the sport to more success than ever.

Steve Phelps Committed To Developing NASCAR Further

The president of NASCAR has seen some great success in the current years. And he surely is devoted to taking the sport to a whole new level.

Phelps said, “We’re going to be bold and innovative.”

He added, “I think we’ve done that, whether you’re talking about scheduling innovation, think about going to the LA Coliseum and running an exhibition race. The Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum. We never would have done that, right?”

“First time any of us heard that, they brought it to me, I’m like, ‘Can we do that?’ It was important. So we’re going to be bold. We’re going to be innovative. We’re going to keep mashing the gas, if you will. That’s been the success of NASCAR over the last two-and-a-half years, is doing things that are unexpected, going to places that are unexpected.”

We don’t know what NASCAR has in store for us, but we sure can’t wait to see!
