In NASCAR, drivers have proved time and time again that age is just a number. Former NASCAR driver and Missouri Sports Hall of Famer Kenny Wallace is a perfect example of that. Herman has once again underlined his racing skills with a victory at a dirt racing circuit. The 60-year-old veteran revealed the joyous news of his victory in the 2023 DIRTcar Racing Missouri/Illinois Regional Championship with his fans on Twitter. Kenny Wallace also added a lovely message for all his fellow ex-drivers who have retired from the sport.

Kenny Wallace claims a DIRT car crown

Compared to his closest-placed competitors, Kenny Wallace participated in a relatively high number of races. Having raced on 32 nights, Kenny Wallace ended the 2023 Missouri/Illinois region championship season with three wins and 1959 points. This was enough for him to take the title. Rick Conoyer finished second behind Kenny with two wins and 1857 points in 48 nights.

Kenny Wallace announced his victory on Twitter, writing, “Honored to have won the 2023 @DIRTcarRacing Missouri / Illinois Regional Championship at 60 years old and back to back against the toughest competitors the Midwest has to offer.”

While age can take away a driver’s reaction time and reflexes, it has yet to affect Kenny Wallace much in dirt racing. However, according to him, even if it’s a scorching day in July outside, he couldn’t lose his love for racing. When it’s July and 100 degrees out I ask myself “what the f**k am I doing?” Billy Smith says it best. “Herman, you still love racing.” Yes, I do,” added Kenny.

Following the revelation, Kenny penned an inspiring message asking his fellow ex-drivers to keep racing even if they didn’t produce the best results. He added, “As I have learned. If you can’t win a lot then you gotta, finish second. This is for the old guys to never give up and keep doing what you love.

Since he entered dirt racing, Kenny Wallace’s love for it has deepened. While his affinity for dirt tracks is no secret to the public, not many people would know why he chose dirt racing over super late model racing.

In 2017, Kenny Wallace ran 70 races in a single year. The following year, he announced that 2019 was the year of dirt racing for him. Revealing his intentions to become a full-time racer on dirt tracks in 2019, Kenny had left behind the speculations about a role in the broadcast booth. FOX Sports wanted him to join their broadcast, but unfortunately for them, the Hall of Famer had already decided what he wanted to do instead.

Speaking to Shane Walters, he said, “When I said I’m going to run dirt races. I meant just that. I’m going to run the dirt car as much as I want. TV will be secondary.

Kenny Wallace has progressed a lot on dirt tracks. Last season, he ran a car in the season finale of Tony Stewart’s Camping World SRX Series at the Lucas Oil Speedway in August. That was truly a magnificent way to debut in the competition. However, once upon a time, Super Late Model racing also came calling.

“I started dirt racing at 41, I’m 55 now. I don’t run a super late model because the mo**er-fu**ers will break you,” said Kenny Wallace in 2018 when asked about the speculations to race in super late model cars.

One take at a time

I instantly fell in love with the sport as I witnessed the cars' breakneck speeds and the robust nature of the sport and its drivers. As I had a deep-rooted interest in automobiles, the sport naturally piqued my interest in a jiffy. Kyle Busch and his cutthroat style of racing played an important role in getting me hooked to stock car racing as I hopped on streams to watch him win races.
