“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” These words by Paulo Coelho seem pertinent to contemporary times and reinforce the power of self-belief. If these profound words by the eminent writer fail to strike a chord, perhaps the historic feat by the Hall of Famer back in 2017 might serve the purpose. The time when Jeff Gordon manifested his team’s victory in the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona.

The names Rolex and Daytona might be as different as chalk and cheese, but both exude excellence through their brands. While the Swiss watch brand boasts the zenith of craftsmanship, racing on the track of Daytona requires high precision from the drivers. As a result, the concoction of both labels is nothing less than an enigma for the racing world and is evident through the ongoing endurance racing series. However, before another team claims its new set of coveted Rolex watches, it is time to delve deeper into how Jeff Gordon epitomized their victory.

Jeff Gordon created an iconic tattoo for the 2017 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona

The Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona finally kicked off the racing season, after a long off-season. The 2024 season marks the 62nd year of the twice-around-the-clock challenge, consequently, celebrated drivers around the world flocked to the iconic track to try their hands in endurance racing. Among the celebrated driver’s roster is former Formula 1 champion Jenson Button who is making his debut in the series after his stint in the LeMans.

The driver joined Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport, with the former Rolex 24 Daytona champion Jordan Taylor. Wayne Taylor Racing has been one of the regular presence on the tracks of the endurance racing series and has provided seats to drivers like Fernando Alonso. However, the team tasted success in 2017, when Jeff Gordon joined the team as the fourth driver. To add the cherry on top, the former NASCAR Cup Series driver made a unique tattoo, “24 Hours To Victory,” manifesting their victory in the series.

The story was unraveled by Gordon’s teammate back in 2017 Jordan Taylor on his Instagram profile. He recalled, “A little story time from the 2017 Rolex 24 at Daytona. That year, we had a tradition at WTR of creating a unique temporary tattoo for each race weekend for the whole team to wear. Jeff was joining us for that event, so we gave him the job to come up with his own design for us to wear.”

“He came up with the brilliant idea of a Rolex Daytona with all of the drivers faces on it and the slogan, ‘24 Hours To Victory’. A tattoo that we’d wear during the race which would hopefully be replaced by the real thing 24 hours later. And that’s just what happened. Here are a few clips and pictures from that weekend, including the first public sighting of Rodney Sandstorm,” Taylor concluded.

While 2017 was surely a memory to cherish for time to come, the 2024 endurance racing series proved to be a tough nut to crack for Jordan Taylor, as he suffered a mechanical failure in his GTP.

Although leading the field in the initial stages, the Wayne Taylor Racing-Andretti Racing branding Motorsports, which was contending in the GTR series, was the first car in the class to suffer a mechanical failure, just eight hours into the sport. The reason being the hybrid powertrain ran out of power, which resulted in the closure of electrical systems. Owing to this, the team lost one of its two Acuras.
