Ty Gibbs Wants NASCAR’s Overseas Ambitions to Unfurl at F1’s Favorite Asian Retreat

NASCAR is looking forward to a global expansion of its races. For the first time in more than six decades, NASCAR plans to host Cup Series races outside the United States. While a few exhibition races have been hosted in Canada, Europe, Mexico, and Brazil, there haven’t been any competitive Cup Series races hosted internationally. But, the new ambitions of NASCAR seem to determine a promising global pursuit and Ty Gibbs has shared his views regarding the same.

The last international series was when drivers went to Toronto to race at the Canadian Exposition Stadium in 1958. However, with plans for the expansion rumored to be put into effect from the 2025 season, drivers seem excited. Even young professionals like Gibbs appear exhilarated about the global venture. In accord with this, the 21-year-old has expressed his desire to race at a particular destination. Interestingly, it’s not among the mentioned countries.

According to reports, Canada and Mexico are likely to host the Cup Series next year. Following this revelation, the racing world is enthralled with expectations of a remarkable experience. Considering it to be NASCAR’s hottest topic at the moment, Ty Gibbs was asked about his views on the same. During an interview with Rubbin is Racing, the interviewer mentioned, “I would love to see you guys overseas. Maybe that would be incredible, and then,” an excited Gibbs cut him short and said “Singapore!” Spider appreciated the young driver’s choice as he said “Singapore would be sweet.”

This was Gibbs’ way of expressing that even though he was excited for races at the rumored places, F1’s favorite Asian retreat will also prove to be a great international destination for racers. In context with the same, the host referred to ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and called the choice “incredible.” This line of discussion succeeded the questions about driver’s initial liking for the international platforms.

Spider asked the young driver “NASCAR is rumored to have some interest in potentially racing in both Mexico and Canada. Are those things that you as a driver would appreciate?” While Ty Gibbs sounded excited about a race in Mexico, he initially seemed unsure of any race in Canada. But later, concerning a rumored race in Montreal, he expressed a positive response.

“Yeah, I mean Mexico would be awesome. I thought it would be super cool. I don’t know what’s going on in Canada, I don’t know where, I don’t even, I have never even heard that rumor. But I don’t know, I don’t feel like there’s too much going on up there anyway. So, it might just be kind of chill, but Mexico would be fun, be crazy.” he said. However, on being reminded of a rumor of racing in Montreal this year, Gibbs admitted “That would be awesome,” and with that, the anticipation for more global race tracks and challenges will be tenfold.

NASCAR to extend its boundaries

In a recent revelation to Fox Sports, NASCAR President Steve Phelps opened up about his plans to extend NASCAR’s reach beyond the United States. While he made no official announcement, Phelps said “I have nothing to announce today. But I would be surprised next year in our ’25 schedule if we didn’t go north of the border and we didn’t go south of the border.” Having said that, President Phelps is also considering hosting NASCAR races in Southern California.

While Cup Series races have not yet been hosted in Mexico and Canada, the Xfinity and Truck Series races were hosted in Canada years back. The Xfinity Series races were held at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, from 2007-12. The Truck Series races were also held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the 2013-19 seasons.

However, not in the practice of hosting races, NASCAR already has its place in both countries. While the NASCAR Mexico Series was founded in 2004, the one in Canada was established in 2007. The 2025 season is thus expected to be an unparalleled experience.
