If there is one team that has really put itself on the map in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series, it is Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing. The team’s resurgence commenced only in the last five races of the regular season when they won three of them. Although Chris Buescher earned those victories on the track, fans and experts are heaping praise on Brad Keselowski for his role in making the team better, and why shouldn’t they? It’s there for everyone to see in plain sight.
But the road to success was not easy for the NASCAR veteran. Keselowski took a huge risk when he left Team Penske for RFK Racing. Today, he might be one of the most respected members of the team, but back in the initial stages, it was not smooth sailing. So much so that Keselowski himself said that he wanted a return to Penske. In a recent interview, the 39-year-old revealed what it was like when talks began between him and Roush Fenway Racing.

He might be happy with the progress he has made since he joined, but Brad Keselowski did not sugarcoat his words when he explained the difficult negotiations that took place prior to his joining the team in 2022 after 11 years with Penske.
“You know I had made comments that I wanted to come back to Penske and I meant that. I was very sincere and…but there’s a lot of uncertainty in the landscape. What is now Roush Fenway Racing reached out to me and said, hey, we’re trying to make some decisions,” the 2012 Cup Series champions revealed.
Before the next-generation car came out in 2022, the No. 6 Ford Mustang driver was contacted by the officials at Roush Fenway Racing the year prior, asking if he would be interested in a seat. But what the veteran racer wanted was a part of the ownership of the company, which spurred months of negotiations until they came to “somewhat agreeable terms.”
“The next-gen car is coming out next year and they asked me if I was interested in it and my answer was I would be interested if you know, I was also an owner of the company or part owner of the company, and long story short, that was several months of working through that, throughout the winter of 2020, spring of 2021 until we came to somewhat agreeable terms and the rest is history,” Keselowski added.
Keselowski’s vision of taking RFK Racing to the top of the mountain is certainly paying dividends in 2023. Almost two years of hard work paired with skillful driving on track have propelled them as one of the heavyweights this year, and they’re only just getting started.

It was a historic night for a team that had been out of the championship picture for far too long. Now, with momentum on their side, Brad Keselowski aims to make them perennial title challengers.
“I’m proud of everybody in the team and certainly Chris for his efforts but, you know, the bigger picture is to have a sustainable race team that can win for championships for a few years to come and be a perennial championship contender,” the 39-year-old said after Daytona on Saturday.
