Patrick Beverley was traded to the Bucks in return for Cam Payne and a draft pick. While the loud veteran guard wasted no time making his larger-than-life presence known in Milwaukee, it seems like Payne might be a little lost. But not to worry, Beverley is at hand. Always, it seems.

In a hilarious tweet, before the games for tonight began, Bev reminded Payne to take the physical. “Somebody tell Cam Payne take his physical. I’m trying to play tonight,” he wrote. Payne, for his part, responded good-naturedly amidst the post-media talk by thanking Pat for his timely reminder.

Bev’s plea to clear the physical is valid because otherwise, they would both be back in their old locker rooms. Failure to clear the test would nullify the deal. It was a given that the 76ers would look to make moves ahead of the deadline. With their saving grace, the dominant center, Joel Embiid out for the season, Philly needed more depth to keep the production going. With that in mind, they had brought in Buddy Hield from Indiana, in addition to Payne.

Payne will primarily see himself running the offensive unit off the bench. But that would happen only after the team gets healthy. His 39.7% from deep with the Bucks is a reliable number. And his average of less than one turnover is also a great sign for Philly.

Another aspect is his skill to be a real pest on the defensive end. The Sixers will be counting on him to put it to good use when defending players like his former teammate, Damian Lillard, or Jrue Holiday of the Celtics. Payne finished with 20 points, six assists, and three rebounds tonight. This isn’t Cam’s first rodeo either.

Along with professing his appreciation for Patrick Beverley, Payne also said that he is used to the sudden changes as it’s not the first time he’s had to switch. He is in the ninth year now, and the Philadelphia 76ers are the tenth team he has played over the course of his career. Three of the teams he’s played are affiliate teams under the NBA franchises. And one was the Shanxi Loongs, the Chinese professional team under the Northern Division of the CBA.

Yet, he admitted that it was tough. “There’s still a lot of things, man,” he said. “I gotta find out tendencies of the other guys… gotta figure out the offense a little bit more, figure out where all my guys can strive. Figure out their spots,” he named a few.

Hield, for his part, also contributed 20 points, six assists, and four rebounds. Payne had also said that playing with Buddy felt like they have known each other for a long time. In short, everything points to a great start. The 76ers are obviously looking to make a title run. And these trade moves were the start.

“Not only is there more to life than basketball, there’s a lot more to basketball than basketball” - Jackson had a simple philosophy when he was coaching the Lakers. He wanted everyone to succeed and grow in the service of something bigger than themselves. This is what struck me the most.
