The Duquesne Dukes got knocked out of the NCAA tournament after losing to the Illinois Fighting Illini in the second round. The game marked the end of LeBron James’ High School coach Keith Dambrot’s head coaching career at Duquesne. However, the program did not have to look far to find the next person to carry the torch after Dambrot. In a surprising turn of events, LeBron took the role of an Insider and broke the news of Duquesne hiring his old teammate as their new head coach.

LeBron James announced on X that Duquesne was hiring his old high school teammate Dru Joyce III as their new head coach following Dambrot’s retirement. “I’m proud to announce! As the unquestioned source I am confirming that Dru Joyce is the new HC at Duquesne University and is meeting with the team right now! So damn happy and proud of you my brother!!!” LeBron wrote.

Dru Joyce III and LeBron James were teammates at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and won multiple state titles together. They remain close friends even decades after parting ways. LeBron was also coached by Dru Joyce III’s father in High School following Dambrot’s stint. Therefore, it is fitting that LeBron is the one announcing Dru’s promotion to his new role at Duquesne.

Joyce joined Duquesne as the Associate Head Coach under Keith Dambrot in May 2022. Under Dambrot and Joyce’s leadership, the Dukes won the Atlantic 10 tournament and made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 1977. Dru Joyce III could be a great choice for Duquesne’s new head coach considering his extensive experience playing overseas. He played in Europe for 12 seasons and retired as the Basketball Bundesliga’s all-time assists leader. As the announcement sunk in, fans were quick to express their approval of LeBron James’ role.

NBA World reacts to LeBron James’ new role

While the NBA World was thrilled to hear about Dru Joyce III’s promotion at Duquesne, they were more interested in LeBron James being the source of the news like a true NBA Insider. Fans went into a frenzy after LeBron broke the news and deemed him better than veteran Insiders Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania.

This fan wrote, “You’re already better than Woj & Shams my King.” The NBA World followed suit.
