The Christmas Day showdown between two formidable teams did not go how everybody expected it to. The Boston Celtics defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 126-115. While Anthony Davis showcased another stunning night, LeBron James and Austin Reaves had a subpar night. James finished the night with 16 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds. So close to a double-double. Reaves, on the other hand, had 11 points, three assists, and six rebounds.

But what has got everyone’s attention now is the combined plus-minus of these three.

According to Russo, last year’s combined 390 minutes showcased +149 with the trio on-court. This season, though, it’s down to +4 in 330 minutes of floor time. A difference of 145 points!

Looking at their individual +/- might shed some light on the whole situation. Last season saw Austin Reaves had a plus-minus of +214 on his own. The same number that King James put up. Davis was also not too far behind with a +205 in the 2022-23 season. This season, though, Reaves is down to -44. Along with him, James has +93 and Davis has +65 in the 2023-24 season.

These stats are enough to understand why there is such a staggering difference in the numbers. While “The Brow” heated up late this season, Reaves has been on a steady line. James, on the other hand, is his usual self, with a side of injuries, longer game time, and family.

Though Bron will have cameras following him wherever he goes, with the Purple and Gold likely starting a new chapter with Austin Reaves and AD in the forefront, a major share of scrutiny will be on the pair of them. Especially for the 25-year-old guard whom LeBron and the Lakers have placed great trust in.

But for now, the visiting Celtics’ victory at home court has been a scathing disappointment for LA.

James is none too happy with the team’s progress

Talking to the media after their loss, the ‘Akron Hammer’ didn’t hide his disappointment. Having been with the Lakers through thick and thin, and with the kind of talent they boast now, LeBron spoke for the team when he said, “I don’t think we’re where we wanna be to be able to compete against the top teams.”

For the Celtics, this win has pretty much confirmed their top place in the Eastern Conference. While Boston’s record improved to 20-6, the Lakers are now 16-15. Since the inaugural in-season championship run, LA has had a hard time keeping things together.

While it may or may not be related, LeBron’s comment is one that is echoed by everyone; players, coaches, and fans.

One take at a time

“Not only is there more to life than basketball, there’s a lot more to basketball than basketball” - Jackson had a simple philosophy when he was coaching the Lakers. He wanted everyone to succeed and grow in the service of something bigger than themselves. This is what struck me the most.
