The James family has always been the picture of unity, grounded, loyal, and close. LeBron and Savannah stand as the steady core, showing up for each other through every win and setback. That same love runs deep in their kids. Over the weekend, Bryce made his Arizona debut, with girlfriend Sadie Johnson witnessing the game live and cheering him on with a sweet “#6❤️💙” post. And naturally, Bronny’s girlfriend, Parker Whitfield, had to join in the love with her own show of support for the young Laker.

But before that, let’s track how it all unfolded. As Bronny James celebrated his 21 birthday, mother Savannah wrote an emotional note, expressing her pride in the Lakers guard. “I’m so overly confident in the man you are that I have no tears. Just gratitude that I was chosen to watch you become the man you are today. I pray for you so much happiness, health, joy, growth, courage, inner peace and an abundance of love!! Happiest Birthday @bronny!!!” she wrote in an Instagram post.

Savannah James became a mother young age. She was only 18 when she and LeBron James welcomed Bronny James into their lives. It was an adjustment for the couple, who were battling the Akron Hammer’s growing fame while managing their family. Looking back at the journey, she knows it could have gone “1 of 2 ways”. But Lady James wasn’t the only one who had an emotional night recalling how her firstborn is making a place for himself.

The 39-year-old posted a collection of her son’s pictures through the years. It showcased the evolution of Bronny James, going from a newborn in her hands to now an independent man who has battled through challenging obstacles. Parker also wished the Lakers guard on his special day separately on her IG story with a caption, “my babe’s birthday today!!! xoxo💗, 21!!” However, Savannah James and their family are beyond grateful just to see him alive. While at USC, James suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout on July 24, 2023. It sidelined him for the entire collegiate season, and he even needed surgery to address the issue.

The less said, the better. It was a difficult time for the family. Even playing basketball came with attached risks to his life. However, as a family, they showed immense support to Bronny James in his recovery process. It took time, but ultimately, he made it to the NBA and played alongside his father. James is also in an encouraging environment, working with the LA Lakers on developing his talents. And this season, he could see more action on the floor.

Bronny James battles an uncertain future with the Lakers

HC JJ Redick was clear from the beginning about what he wants out of Bronny. He wants to develop James Jr. as an organic product of the Lakers organization. Working on that plan, last year, the 21-year-old moved between the main roster and the G-League. Then, during the Summer League, Bronny showcased that he is improving (if not drastically), especially as a point guard.

There’s no doubt that Redick reads the game better and is building on his strong foundation. But most importantly, the Lakers coach sees one major change that is a big positive from last season. “He is so much more comfortable and confident as a player. Skill-wise, read-wise, all of those things have improved, but there’s a big difference between improving those things in individual workouts and small group settings, and doing it 5-on-5. … He’s a totally different player than he was a year ago,” said the Lakers head coach.

Still, the Lakers are in a tricky position. With LeBron James opting in for his final season, Bronny James’ continuity with the organization is in doubt. He may choose to stay or may not, depending on how the family manages to keep emotions aside. Because with defense being a focus of his game, Marcus Smart’s addition could help a great deal in developing the 21-year-old into a ball pest for the Lakers.

Also, the two preseason games have been poor for Bronny so far, so he might continue to shuffle between the G-League and the NBA. Another reason for that is, the Lakers also have a complete roster in comparison to last season. But it’s clear that Redick’s trust is beginning to grow in the young guard.
