Playing against your former teammate can always be bittersweet. While you reminisce on the time spent, you also need to use everything you’ve learned about them from playing alongside them. Stephen Curry is in a similar position tonight. Having spent fifteen seasons in the NBA, Curry has seen many players come and go.
Tonight, as the Golden State Warriors are preparing to face the Detroit Pistons, they will come face-to-face against a former teammate, James Wiseman. And Steph had something to say about it.

Stephen’s thoughts on James
It is known that James had his fair share of ups and downs with the Warriors when he played from 2020-2023. But now, Curry is of the view that things will be better for the 22-year-old. When talking to the media last night, he was asked about James and he replied, “I haven’t talked to him so I don’t know where his head is. But he’s a great dude, you know. He was a great teammate when he was with us. Look forward to crossing paths with him, talking to him. Show him the love.”

He also spoke on Wiseman’s current struggles saying, “ I know he is not playing much but.. it’s the challenge that he is facing in terms of understanding how he can continue to get better, you know, and force them to play him.” Curry added that knowing the kind of person that he is, he should have extreme confidence in himself to figure it out. Even if it does not happen on the timeline that he wants for himself.

James becoming better with the Pistons
Curry was also asked about his thoughts on him becoming better much quicker than his time with the Warriors. He agreed that it may happen sometimes but also added, “His story is still developing. Nobody is putting a pen in that right now. He’s a young dude. He is super talented, works hard. [I’m] confident he’ll be able to figure out. Just a matter of when and he will figure it out.”

Wiseman was selected by the Golden State Warriors as the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. He made his NBA debut on December 22, 2020, against the Brooklyn Nets where he put up 19 points, six rebounds, and two steals. After a few games, he was ruled out for the rest of the season due to his torn meniscus.

Later in 2022, he was assigned to play for the Santa Cruz Warriors. While he did have a few good performances, his recurring injury issues hindered his consistency, and he was eventually traded to the Detroit Pistons earlier this year. He is still struggling to find his rhythm with the team, but now with Steph’s stamp of approval, do you think he will get better?
