The Boston Celtics, currently the top seed in the East, face an uncertain timeline for the return of their All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday. Holiday is sidelined with a “dead arm” injury sustained during their win over the Washington Wizards last Sunday. This throws a wrench into their preparation for tomorrow’s showdown against the Chicago Bulls (who sit at 9th in the East) at 7 PM ET at the United Center. So, will Holiday be able to suit up for this match-up?

Dead arm syndrome, a common foe for baseball pitchers due to repetitive throwing motions, can cause arm fatigue, weakness, and even numbness. Holiday reportedly experienced these symptoms after a screen set by a Wizards player during the game.

The Celtics’ medical staff is overseeing Holiday’s recovery, focusing primarily on rest. This highlights Holiday’s importance to the team, as the veteran guard has started all but nine games this season.

As per the latest injury report, the Celtics are missing several key players: Jrue Holiday (shoulder), Jayson Tatum (ankle), and Al Horford (toe). While Tatum and Horford have been listed as “day-to-day”, Holiday was ruled “out” for the game.

The Bulls’ injury list is even more extensive, with Patrick Williams (foot) out for the season, Zach LaVine (ankle) out for the season, Coby White (hip) questionable, Julian Phillips (foot) out, Alex Caruso (ankle) questionable, and Lonzo Ball (knee) out for the season.

Jrue Holiday: Recovery & Statistics

While Boston has shown resilience in overcoming absences throughout the year, a long absence for Holiday, especially with just 12 regular season games remaining, is less than ideal. However, their strong position in the standings allows for a more cautious approach. Coach Joe Mazzulla confirmed Holiday’s gradual improvement and emphasized a slow return process.

In an interview, Holiday said. “I still want to play…That’s part of the reason I play basketball. But it’s also keeping rhythm. Sometimes when you’re out for a long time you break rhythm, but I feel like I’ve been in a good groove and I want to continue to play.” Beyond his well-rounded averages of 12.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, Holiday shines in clutch moments. He has a staggering 50% shooting percentage from inside the arc during clutch situations and leads the Celtics with 14 clutch-time assists.

Holiday has a knack for performing against the Bulls. Throughout his career, he’s averaged 14.4 points, 10.0 assists, and 5.8 rebounds in five games against them. Notably, three of these games were with the Milwaukee Bucks before his trade to Boston. In his two most recent match-ups against Chicago as a Celtic, Holiday averaged a solid 11.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 5.0 rebounds.

Holiday’s injury has provided an opportunity for Payton Pritchard to shine. Over the past four games, Pritchard has averaged an impressive 19.3 points and 8.0 assists per game, while maintaining a consistent 40% three-point shooting across all matchups.
