Dallas Mavericks can’t forget February 2, 2025, no matter how much they want to. Luka Doncic was traded to the Lakers. It gave birth to a new enemy in the form of Nico Harrison. Since that day, they have chanted “Fire Nico”, a clear declaration about how they felt after the trade. Now, they might just see their wishes come true.

There’s a lot of chatter around Harrison right now. The Mavericks have started the season 3-7, and their offense looks lackluster. Likewise, the top brass is on edge as their bold experiment comes crumbling down in front of them. Most recently, owner Patrick Dumont stepped in to make a decision on resting Anthony Davis.

According to Tim MacMahon, that was the start of something “significant”.

“At this point, I believe it is a matter of when, not if, Nico Harrison will be fired. There is a very, very strong likelihood that will be midseason,” he said on Hoop Collective. And he isn’t alone. Even Marc Stein has heard rumors about Dumont possibly being pushed to fire Nico Harrison amidst the Mavericks’ disastrous run.

The biggest reason is right in front of the team. The Mavs rank last in offensive rating, while the Lakers are among the best. The differentiating factor is one Luka Doncic, who got Dallas to the NBA Finals a year before being traded. Harrison’s fingerprints were all over that decision.

He never quite understood what it meant. “I did know that Luka was important to the fan base. I didn’t quite know it to what level,” he said in an earlier interview. That alone might have burned fans even more. So now, as news about his possible axing emerges, they are celebrating like nothing else matters.

Mavericks fans ecstatic with Nico Harrison news

LETS MAKE IT TODAYYYYYYYYYY,” one fan shared their excitement about the update MacMahon shared about Nico Harrison. However, nothing substantial has taken place so far. Stein did claim that Dumont is willing to give the GM some time to get the team in order. In that regard, the latest win against the Wizards is a start.

But that won’t fix how the fans have felt all these months. Fortune favors the bold, unless you’re Nico Harrison. Good riddance to the worst GM in sports history,” another fan commented. For them, Harrison’s situation was irreparable after he traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

His not understanding what Doncic meant to the city was where the mistake began. So, although the news about him possibly getting fired is cruel, Mavs fans simply don’t care. But they aren’t putting the blame entirely on Harrison. “Good. And then the Adelson’s need to sell. Dumont is every bit as responsible for this s—t,” a fan wrote.

That brings us to the complicated part of the situation. Dumont’s trust might have dwindled in Nico Harrison. However, because he did co-sign on the Doncic trade, NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin doubts if the owner has the “stones” to part ways with the current general manager.

To some Mavericks fans, his staying or going doesn’t make a huge difference. “What difference does it make? Dallas was nuked into ash. It could take years or decades to recover,” one fan pointed out. But that’s the thing. The Mavs are still waiting to see Kyrie Irving return. Additionally, minor injuries to Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively see the team be shorthanded.

If anything, this core is still very much capable of making some noise in the West. And while Harrison is the reason it’s made, the Mavs fanbase has made its mind clear. “We’re close to finally getting rid of the Snake,” one fan said. That’s how strongly they feel about Harrison’s decision that shifted the landscape for the Mavericks.
