D’Angelo Russell’s name was plastered all over the headlines in the days leading up to the trade deadline. He was linked to every single trade the Lakers explored this season. However, this wasn’t his first rodeo. He had been shipped four times, after all. But this time, he knew how to navigate these rumors, largely because of Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers drafted Russell as the second overall pick in 2015, during Kobe Bryant’s farewell season. However, before leaving, Kobe imparted words of wisdom that still resonate with him. In an interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, D’Lo revealed that the Lakers’ legend had advised him to “Create new headlines,” to deal with the narratives that can come with being a Laker. And so, that’s what he did. Rather than focusing on the narratives he can’t control, Russell directed his energy towards maximizing his performance on the court.

His words weren’t just mere platitudes, though. Ever since the rumor mill began swirling, Russell has unleashed all his offensive firepower. In January, he averaged 22.7 points, 6.0 assists, and 1.8 rebounds, a significant leap from his 10.2 points per game in December. His impressive streak continued into February, where he maintained a strong performance with 20.2 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.1 rebounds.

Now, in March, the 2019 All-Star shows no signs of slowing down, with current averages of 22.0 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.8 rebounds across five games. And if he can keep this momentum going, he just might save the Lakers the trouble of looking for a third superstar.

D’Angelo Russell’s late-season resurgence can help the Lakers make a playoff push

From being viewed as having the most tradeable contract in the 2024 offseason to becoming the player who guides his team to victory, Russell’s resurgence is one of the best redemption stories this season. He proved his mettle against the Milwaukee Bucks after erupting for a season-high 44 points to tow the LeBron-less Lakers to a 123-122 win. The Lakers boast a strong record of 38-22 when both LeBron and Russell are in the lineup together. Moreover, the team has an impressive 11-3 record when Russell scores at least 25 points.

“I think he has the ability to do whatever the team needs, especially offensively. That’s what’s special about him. He can adapt to whatever the game calls for,” said James of Russell’s impact on the Lakers’ playoff push. Therefore, if D’Lo keeps this hot streak alive, the Lakers can still climb the standings.
